GCSE German enables students to communicate confidently in both spoken and written German through a range of engaging and relatable thematic contexts.

The course is organised around six broad themes chosen because they reflect students’ real lives, interests and future aspirations: 

• My Personal World

• Lifestyle and Wellbeing

• My Neighbourhood

• Media and Technology

• Studying and My Future

• Travel and Tourism.

Across these themes, students develop the vocabulary and grammar needed to talk about themselves, understand others, and explore life in German-speaking communities around the world.

Four assessments—Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing—are designed to be accessible, meaningful and fair. 

Speaking tasks use familiar, realistic scenarios.

Listening and Reading papers include both familiar and culturally rich settings with clear support for unfamiliar references. 

Writing tasks allow students to express their own ideas and experiences without relying on imagined situations.

Throughout the course, students develop a strong foundation in the core skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, building their linguistic confidence and accuracy step by step.
