Your first year of high school English will be challenging but also greatly rewarding: through the guidance of dedicated and highly-capable teachers, you will hone your skills in writing, deepen your knowledge of literature and literary techniques, and enhance your abilities to read complex works of fiction and nonfiction. To help you prepare for the school year and to keep your skills sharp over summer, you are encouraged to complete a summer reading assignment.
This year, you can choose at least one book from the list of nominees for the Abraham Lincoln Readers’ Choice Award, read the book(s), and prepare responses to the discussion questions; alternatively, you may select a title from the AP Literature and Composition List and/or the AP Language and Composition List, read the book(s), and prepare responses to the discussion questions. At the beginning of the school year, you will participate in a discussion-based activities with your fellow English 1 Honors students to deepen your understanding of your selected text and finally respond to it in writing. Your completion of this assignment before the beginning of the school year will provide your English 1 Honors teacher with valuable information on your current strengths and weaknesses in reading and writing as well as create a common starting point for all students entering Community High School District 218.
Here are the discussion questions. After reading the book of your choice, prepare your answers to the discussion questions.
