AFRICAN AMERICAN CULTURAL AWARENESS

African American Cultural Awareness Club (AACA) of Alan B. Shepard High School is dedicated to knowledgeable, cultural, social and ethnic diversity. The AACA's focus is to shape awareness, education, and foster a new level of  awareness about being Black in today's society. Our goal is to teach about diversity and show that through engaging in positive activities focused around broadening acceptance and resilience for all cultures. The overall goal is to get a better understanding of other cultures while learning  about ours.

Anime club is an after school activity which aims to broaden the understanding of the inherently deep culture of Japan. Members of this activity will experience cultural diversity by watching anime, reading manga, evaluating art, and replicating various food staples that can be viewed as representative. Overall, Anime club proves to be a safe space to have engaging discussion, create cultural awareness, and cultivate open mindedness all within one room.

Have you ever met a Deaf person? Did you know there are Deaf and Hard of Hearing students at Shepard? Come join us to learn about the vibrant, complex, all encompassing language that is ASL!! (American Sign Language) Students attending this club will enjoy a welcoming, safe environment led by a Deaf adult.   We will learn not only about how to sign, but also about Deaf culture, Deaf history, and overall etiquette when interacting with the Deaf community. Come learn with us!

BUSINESS PROFESSIONALS OF AMERICA

Business Professionals of America is the leading CTSO (Career Technical Student Organization) for students pursuing careers in business management, finance and accounting, information technology, computer programming, and other related career fields. BPA has more than 51,000 members in over 2,300 chapters in 23 states. Members of BPA will engage in professional, social, and community service events.  They will learn leadership skills and meet new people. They will compete against students from other schools in their chosen business-related events. All students are welcome.

The Shepard Communications Club helps to promote all Shepard school news. Writers, reporters, photographers, artists, social media experts...all skills and talents are welcome to join the Comms Club, no experience necessary. We focus on celebrating all the wonderful things Shepard has to offer, and telling the community all about it....everything from publicizing school events to awarding "Staff Member of the month" and more! 

CONTEST PLAY

Contest Play is an IHSA sanctioned competition theater production. Auditions are open to anybody and will take place at the end of fall semester! We focus on character development, advanced acting, and dramatic techniques. You can also be a part of the backstage crew where you learn to design, build, set up, and take down a full theatrical production. The cast and crew work together to put on a 40 minute show that we perform in competition against other schools!

Group Interpretation is a Spring SWSC/IHSA competitive speech/theater event in which student performers and musicians perform a story within 30 minutes, with minimal set, props, or costuming. Auditions are open to anybody and will take place in November! Stay Tuned!

The Shepard Improv Club is a place where you can learn to be a better, more confident performer on-stage. We build improvisational comedy skills that will help you be funnier and more impactful in front of an audience - no script required! We'll learn techniques and games from Second City and other schools of improv. Although the club will perform shows for people this year, it's not necessarily a requirement to join the club!

JAZZ BAND

Jazz Band rehearses from late fall to spring on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 - 5:00 pm.  It explores a variety of styles on music such as swing, funk, Latin, rock, ballads, and more. The Jazz band performs at many different events but the premier event is the band dinner dance. Instrumentation consists of saxophones, trumpets, trombones, piano, guitar, bass, drums, and auxiliary percussion.

Spectrum Literacy Magazine is a long-running student-ran publication. It has been on a hiatus for a few years, but we are bringing it back! We would LOVE to have you come check us out and see what we are about. We believe that our school is packed with talented writers and artists who deserve a platform to showcase that talent. Imagine being a published artist, poet, author, etc. before leaving high school! Very prestigious! 


There are also opportunities for you to grow in this program— you will learn how to be a team member, but you can also develop leadership skills as an editor or editor in chief (a very cool thing to put on your transcripts)! Please come check us out at our first meeting on August 25th at 3:30 pm. We will meet every other week in A103.

NOVA SHOWCHOIR & COMBO

NOVA is our most elite vocal group at Shepard High School; being part of this group is a privilege that takes hard work, dedication, and excellent attendance! This singing and dancing ensemble competes across the Midwest, and has a rich tradition of success and excellence. 

The combo group performs as the back up band accompaniment for the show choir.  The combo performs at all the same performances as the show choir.  All music is based around the concept of the show choir.  Instrumentation can consists of flutes, clarinets, saxophones, mellophones, trumpets, low brass, piano, bass, guitar, drum set.

Supernova is a new acapella group at Shepard High School, formed in 2019. All members of Supernova must be active members of NOVA as well. This group consists of 12-15 of our strongest singers, who will sing challenging repertoire throughout the year. This group will be responsible for various gigs in the community, and many recruiting events throughout the course of the year. Their rehearsal schedule will be determined by members of the group once it is formed. The group is offered at no cost, as an extension of NOVA. Learn about the Shepard story. Students create the school’s yearbook publication that reflects the events and lives of people involved. They take pictures, conduct interviews, design pages, advertise/sell the yearbook, fund-raise, and work under deadlines.  More importantly, students learn real-world skills. They are encouraged to use their creativity to solve problems and put together an accurate, appealing yearbook. When the book is completed, students are able to take pride in their work and celebrate their published product!
