CHS in set in a wonderful setting; the School community is truly fortunate in this green space, but as regulations have changed over time, the School has had to review the campus security and put in place a series of measures to ensure that pupils and staff are safe, as the law requires. The Campus Security Plan sets out the procedures in place for our four "lines of defence" including: controlled access to gates and buildings, pupil supervision, safety in classrooms, positive handling and restraint, panic alarms, intruder alarms, campus security lighting and patrols, CCTV, security companies and emergency services communications and support.
As we’re such a big school with so much going on during the day it is difficult to keep the perimeter secure. One way to help us achieve this is by limiting the number of exits/entrances during the School day.
For staff, the pedestrian and vehicle gates are operated with use of programmed card access at the two main entry points at the Barn and the Claremont Road entrances between 6.30am-9.45pm (Monday-Friday), 7am-7pm (Saturday and Sunday); gates will open automatically on vehicle exit.
The other pedestrian gates at DT and Broomefield are not in use during School times, but can be operated with staff ID cards between 6.30am-8.40am, after 4pm and all day on weekends. A reasonable exception can be made for those needing adjustments for accessing the site, but this will need to be approved by the Director of Operations.
There are some external doors which lead through the perimeter (emergency exits in DT, Gym, Lockhart) and access through these doors is restricted and controlled due to health, safety and security issues with them being used as a thoroughfare into School.
It is essential that staff keep their ID badges safe with them at all times and wear their green lanyard. Lost/stolen IDs and lanyards must be reported to operations@chschool.co.uk immediately and a charge may be made for a replacement.
Marked out visitor walkways are designed to keep parents and visitors to certain routes on their way to the main reception points which allows staff to distinguish legitimate visitors more easily.
Staff are encouraged to be vigilant when moving around the campus and anyone in School during the core lockdown times and:
not wearing a green/gold lanyard and ID card (green/gold does not require supervision);
not wearing any CHS lanyards, (perhaps not signed in)
unaccompanied in a red lanyard (red should be fully supervised at all times)
Staff should politely ask if they need any help and either then escort them to Main Reception, or, if they are not visiting the School for a valid reason, request that they leave the grounds.
The following arrangements are in place in order to reduce the necessity for parents to come beyond the outer perimeter or for students to visit the Lodge outside the inner entry boundary during the course of the school day:
Items can be left by parents/carers during the day at Main Reception
On the occasions when students need to visit the Finance Office team - this will need to be arranged with the Main Reception team or relevant Student Manager as the student will need to be accompanied.
If staff have concerns about anyone acting suspiciously on or around School grounds, they should either call extension 3343 or 3350, use a radio to report it to the Estate team, call the Designated Caretaker on 07528 353482, or contact the Director of Operations on 07548 802 832. Staff are advised to keep emergency contact details in their phones/iPads and use their judgement to call 999 if they witness or become aware of a potentially dangerous situation.
