Welcome to Access to Higher Education at East Sussex College Lewes. Congratulations on taking the first steps towards your future!
An Access to Higher Education Diploma is an intensive Level 3 qualification which runs over 3 days a week for 1 year. The course gives you the necessary preparation and opportunity for entry to University, whether you are seeking a career change, didn't achieve the grades needed for entry to higher education previously or returning to study our Access courses are an excellent opportunity to allow you to do do so.
Entry criteria for these courses is flexible dependant on your chose University progression, for the general pathways we do suggest that learners have a grade 4/C in GCSE Maths and English however there is opportunity to study one of these alongside your diploma. Our Medicine pathway has a high level of entry criteria due to the native of the course and requirements of medical schools.
Our Access pathways primary focus is to give you the necessary knowledge, skills and behaviours to prepare you for higher education. Our pathways have many routes into a wide variety of degrees and our success rate for progression into higher education for 20/21 was 90%.

We recommend you attend one of our course information session and Q&A (compulsory for Medicine applicants) before submitting your application, this helps to reduce interview times to support our covid protocol.
Access to HE general pathways deadline:
Humanities & Social Sciences, Combined Science, Medical Science & Nursing you will be invited to interview after Christmas. We take applications throughout the year up until enrolment in September.
Please note we encourage you to apply early to secure your space on the course.

We support our students in all elements of academic study, UCAS applications and personal statements, interview practice and preparation with BSMS along with 1:1 tutorials on a weekly basis to track and monitor your progress.

BrightIdeas Applications Opening Soon
BrightIdeas is back for 2023 and we wanted you to be the first to know!
This year we’re excited to be collaborating with another medical school to provide aspiring medics, in Year 12, the opportunity to complete a medicine-focussed research project whilst engaging with current medical students and doctors to find out what it’s really like to study medicine . Over the course of four online events and an in-person summer school, students will take part in a number of science-focussed and admissions-related workshops equipping them with the skills and knowledge to make a competitive application to medical school.
We will be opening applications in the next few days but to ensure students receive the programme details straight to their inboxes, we are encouraging anyone who would like to find out more to complete the BrightIdeas 2023: Expression of Interest. As soon as the applications open, we’ll be sure to email!

Alongside our regularly organised talks and events, we may also be able to deliver bespoke sessions regarding medicine admissions, taster sessions, and general information and advice to your students, delivered online or in-person.
We may also be able to attend in-school careers/HE fairs that are organised by your institution.

ACCESS TO HE PREPARATION COURSE- Entry for September 2023
Thinking about doing an Access to HE course in September 2023? Worried you've been out of education for too long? The aim of the qualifications is to offer a range of personal learning skills that give you an opportunity to gain the confidence and knowledge needed to make choices about further study, employment and life.
You will have a designated tutor to provide you support throughout this 10 week course and provide further information, advice and guidance around our Level 3 Acces to HE Diplomas or further study.
This course is an fantastic opportunity prepare learners for the demands of the very intensive Access to HE diplomas, by allowing them to develop many of the study skills needed prior to starting the Access courses.
It is particularly useful for students who are returning to study after a long break and students who wish to improve their written English and gain valuable study skills.
