Dear Parents and Friends of Castle Hill Primary School
It has been another good year on the Hill!
Huge thanks to all our teams: Teachers, PTPs, Administrators, Premises Staff, Cleaners, Kitchen Staff, and others. We are one big community! This is clearly shown by our incredibly supportive friends and governors who work in partnership to make Castle Hill, as one parent said, "a unique place to be".
I have included a small video (link below) that you will have to watch if you are looking for jokes of the highest calibre! You have been warned!

Have a great summer.
From Mr Martin and the CHPS team
Important Update: School Meal Ordering Process - We would like to inform you about an important change to our school meal ordering process, effective from September 2025. Moving forward, pupils will no longer be able to place meal orders in class. All meals must now be pre-ordered by parents or guardians.
Please note the following important guidelines:
Meal orders must be placed in advance (with a midnight cut-off) and cannot be placed or changed on the day of the meal.
A positive account balance is required to place an order successfully.
If you are not pre-ordering a school meal for your child, it is expected that you provide them with a packed lunch from home.
If a child arrives at school without a meal order and does not have a packed lunch, you will be contacted and asked to bring one to school.
These changes are being implemented to ensure every child receives a meal, minimise classroom disruption in the morning, and allow for more efficient meal service. To pre-order meals, please use our online meal ordering system, ScoPay. If you do not have access, please contact the school office before the end of the term. If you need assistance with the ordering process or adding funds to your
child’s account, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at admin@chjs.net. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.
Earring Reminder - To prevent any accidents or injuries, no jewellery, including earrings, may be worn at any time in school, including plastic earrings. If your child does wear earrings to school, they will be asked to remove them (please note that school staff are not permitted to remove them). If your child is unable to remove their earrings or continues to wear them to school, they will be unable to participate in any physical activity, including PE and playtimes, and their parents will be contacted. We also recommend that if you wish to get your child’s ears pierced, this is done at the beginning of the six-week summer holidays, to avoid wearing them to school.
Evening event collection - From September, parents/carers must collect their child from the designated collection point after any evening performance, disco, trip, or movie night, etc. No child will be allowed to walk, cycle or scoot home. The safeguarding of our pupils is our utmost priority, so a contact name and number will be required for any after-school evening event. Any changes to the collection must be reported to the school office via email (in writing, not verbally) before the start of the event.
Parking - Unfortunately, we continue to receive complaints on a weekly basis regarding inconsiderate and illegal parking and driving outside the Greenbank campus. The double yellow lines on the bend leading into the school car park from Winklebury Way and by the school gates indicate that it is not a drop-off zone, and parking is prohibited at all times. By blocking this area, visibility is compromised when exiting onto the main road, which is extremely dangerous. We would really appreciate your help with this situation, as we are trying to avoid a serious accident.
Don't forget to collect any lost property before the school closes for the summer holidays. Any items not named will be donated to charity.

Congratulations to the following Year 4 Greenbank pupils: Amelia, Ari, Ava, Celiné, Chloe, Coco, Darcy, Ella, Hasan-Ali, Jenson, Joe, Luella, Mia, Michayla, Ollie, Oliver, Rowan and Zoyesh, who recently took part in the Young Writers’ Magic Map 100-word story competition and have been selected to have their stories published in a real book. They should be very proud of this fantastic achievement, and we cannot wait to see the published books when they arrive!
The winner of our name the owl competition is Kacie from Year 4, with the winning name chosen by the Leon family of...Oakley! Please see below a new picture of Oakley an Australian Boobook owl, who is now the newest member of the Castle Hill Team. Thank you all who took part and a special thank you to Sofia and her family who came up with the idea to raise money for the Summertime Club.
Rebaz from Freestyle Football wowed us with his cool skills. Pupils were amazed by his freestyle football skills in assembly! ⚽
Year 5 and 6 put on a spectacular production of 'Oliver With A Twist'. Our actors and choir captivated the audience with their stunning show, featuring fantastic acting and upbeat songs. It was a production to remember!
Our end-of-Year 6 production, Oliver... with a Twist, was a huge success and a true showcase of our pupils' talent and creativity. Otis shone in the role of Oliver, delivering a heartfelt performance that brought a tear to everyone’s eye - especially with his surprise solo! Jynelle and Jackson were brilliant as the not-so-terrifying villains, Bill Sykes and Ms Fagan, adding humour and flair to their roles and leaving the audience wondering if they were really all that bad. It was a memorable way to end the year, and we couldn’t be prouder of all the children who helped bring the show to life.
A special thanks to Yulia Anishchenko for her wonderful backdrop. We are so grateful to have such a talent that has been generous enough to complete 3 of our production backdrops in the past year.

The children had a great time during the Skipping Workshop. It's a fantastic programme designed to teach children essential skipping skills, improve their fitness, and build confidence. The sessions are to inspire children to enjoy physical activity through skipping.
What a wonderful time the children, staff and family members had at our sports days. Dealing with the relentless sunshine and rain, which stopped play for a few Greenbank dates, we eventually had two amazing events. Well done to everyone who participated and enjoyed the family picnics and Summer Fayre to finish the day. Winning houses:
Greenbank - Chestnut
Rooksdown - Chestnut
Thank you for working with us to improve attendance at Castle Hill Primary this year. Our overall attendance is 95% (nationally, 94%). Our persistent absences (those pupils below 90%, equivalent to missing half a day a week) are down to 10% (versus 16% nationally).
Our pupils with good attendance are making good progress throughout the school, and we look forward to seeing them attend every day in the new term. Thank you again for sending your pupils regularly to school so that we can teach and develop them to be better learners and citizens of the future.
Our target for this year is 96% or over; last year’s attendance was 95.23%.
Our current percentage is 95.74%.
The classes with the best attendance this half term are:
Rooksdown
KS1 – Year 2 Miss Simpson = 96.12%
KS2 – Year 5 Mrs Harding = 97.2%
Greenbank
Year 5 Miss Jones = 97.07%

In preparation for the Basingstoke girls Tag Rugby Tournament the girls played at Sherborne St John. I always say that you either win or you learn and the girls certainly learnt a lot from that match.
A week later at the Chineham rugby ground the schools were divided into 2 groups of 7. The girls played well in the morning and topped their group. The top seven teams of the two groups progressed into the 'Cup' round. Amazingly, the girls went undefeated in their 6 matches and were crowned champions of Basingstoke. What an amazing accomplishment showing the true Castle Hill characteristics of resilience and perseverance.
So proud of these girls: Jynelle, Daisy, Kenya, Poppy, Isla, Vritika, Lily and Rhyma.
Wow, the Year 5 mixed Tag Rugby team really stepped up in a huge way in the Tag Rugby Schools tournament. It was only recently that some of the boys learnt what offside or what a 'knock-on' was. They won three matches and drew two matches to finish in 4th place. The schools they were playing against had been playing all year long and consisted mostly of Year 6 students.
Not only I, but other teachers were really impressed by how our children conducted themselves. Everyone had so much fun!
Well done to Vritika, Zachary, Rhyma, Eryk, Joseph, Timur, Mason and Jamie.
Our KS1 children had a fantastic time taking part in the Quad Kids competition! They showed great enthusiasm as they tried out the standing long jump, vortex throwing, and running short and long distances. We’re thrilled to share that they came 4th overall! It was wonderful to see their smiles and determination throughout the event. We are super proud of all our young athletes for giving their best and having fun!
The KS2 students competed brilliantly in the recent Quad Kids event, tackling the standing long jump, vortex throwing, and both sprint and long-distance runs. They showed great focus and sportsmanship, and we’re proud to announce they came 8th overall. Many achieved personal bests, and it was inspiring to watch their energy and teamwork on the day. We are super proud of all our participants for their dedication and effort!
We have been planning exciting trips and workshops across all year groups this academic year. These trips are intended to complement and reinforce learning on key curriculum topics. We are aware of the financial challenges that everyone is currently facing, so to help with budgeting, we have set an annual maximum figure of £40 per child, and where possible, lower than this.
Trip amounts are calculated assuming every child participates and contributes to ensuring we have raised sufficient funds. Please remember that the school reserves the right to cancel or postpone the trip or workshop if there are insufficient voluntary contributions.
We hope this is helpful in your financial planning. We are looking forward to some exciting experiences. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.
On Thursday 20th June, Year 2 packed up their lunches and got on the coach to go on an adventure to Marwell Zoo! We saw penguins, giraffes, snow leopards, meerkats and more! We even got to have lunch with the ducks! We all had a fantastic time.
"On our Year 6 Treat Day, we did loads of activities including peg pole, ringos and archery. The day was also a time for us to be with the Rooksdown pupils, which was lots of fun. Our trip to Calshot Activity Centre was absolutely amazing." - written by Jasper R.
Year 3 was visited by Portals to the Past for an exciting Egyptian Day! The children were transported back in time through a day packed with drama, games, and fascinating ancient artefacts. From exploring the secrets of the pyramids to hearing captivating stories of pharaohs and gods, history truly came to life. The immersive experience sparked curiosity and enthusiasm in every child - an unforgettable journey into Ancient Egypt!
Zane E (Year 5 GB) first picked up basketball about a year ago. He signed up to our local Basingstoke team, the Basingstoke Blizzards. He really enjoyed his first sessions, and he decided to stick with the sport.
Last May and June, he trialled for the Reading Rockets U10 team, where he was selected. Again, he had a great season, and at the end-of-season presentation, he received the Player's Player award. His team also made it to their league playoffs.
He also recently trialled for Southampton’s Solent Kestrels U12 National League team and battled it out over 3 separate trial sessions, and was selected. He's most likely the youngest player in the U12 year group and fought for his place against players who are almost twice his height!
We look forward to hearing about his basketball journey with Solent Kestrels.
Congratulations to Tillie T (Year 4 GB), who has just had a really successful week of figure skating!
Firstly, Tillie skated her first-ever duo with her partner, Florence, and they came 3rd. Then, she skated her programme and got a new PB, scoring 11.44 and placing 14th out of 28 skaters from all over the country.
She has been working so hard, and it has really paid off in her performances.
On 21st June, in hot weather of 30 degrees, Taylor F (Year 6 RD) took part in the 10km One Walk in London for the charity JDRF and raised £400 to help with vital research for a cure for diabetes.
Considering it was so hot, he pushed to the end and saw many sights across London.
Well done, Taylor, what an incredible achievement!
Congratulations to our long standing Governor Mr Watson, for receiving his 30 year service medal in the Fire Brigade presented by his Watch Manager.
We are delighted to share some fantastic news about a member of our Castle Hill Primary School team.
Mrs Toobe, who serves as a PTP (Professional Teaching Partner), ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support Assistant) and Clerk to the Governing Body, has been recognised nationally for her outstanding dedication over the past 20 years.
Upon receiving the award, Mrs Toobe mentioned how dedicated all staff are in supporting children day in and day out. This award is not just for her but for all of the Castle Hill Family! It is a testament to all staff how they pull together to deliver outstanding teaching and provide a supportive environment for children’s wellbeing.

On a sunny Sunday in June, 8 members of the CHPS staff took on the Half Marathon Breast Walk Ever charity event. They walked a rather hilly but picturesque 21 km route from IBM Hursley, around Winchester and along the River Itchen for the Against Breast Cancer charity https://breastwalkever.org. With the amazing kindness of colleagues, family, and friends, they raised an incredible £1,565!
Our last collection date for this academic year was on Friday, 27th June, and we raised £45.80. From September, we will be moving over to Happy School Bag.

Summer Fayre - Thank you so much for supporting our summer fayre. We raised a whopping £1,877! Thank you to our wonderful Fundraising Friends and all our volunteers and staff who make these events happen. You are an asset to the school, and we couldn't do it without you. I think we can all say it was the best Summer Fayre we have had yet!
Wicked bars - Well done to those children who won a golden ticket. The prizes have gone down a hit with the children as one of our many prizes was lunch with Mr Martin (won by Rosie S, Year 6). We had some wonderful feedback, and we are super excited to run this again next year. Don't forget to order to win!
Year 6 Leavers Disco - A Night to Remember! 🌟We had an unforgettable evening at our Year 6 Leavers Disco, celebrating the amazing journey of our Year 6 pupils as they get ready for their next adventure! The children had a fantastic time tackling the lock box game, trying their hand at axe throwing (safely, of course!), posing by the beautiful balloon arch, and enjoying plenty of dancing to the tunes of our brilliant DJ. With refreshments on hand and smiles all around, it was a wonderful way to say goodbye. We wish all our Year 6 leavers the very best of luck in their new schools - you will be missed! A heartfelt thank you to all the parents for your incredible support throughout the years and with all of our RDFF events. We couldn’t do it without you!
🎬 Inside Out Movie Night Success! Our Movie Nights for EYFS, KS1 and KS2 were fantastic! The children enjoyed watching the heartwarming film Inside Out 2, complete with plenty of laughs, smiles, and even a few thoughtful moments. Everyone loved the popcorn, snacks, hot dogs and drinks, and it was wonderful to see so many children relaxing and enjoying time with their friends. Thank you to our wonderful volunteers; we couldn't do it without you!
We need you! Come have your say. If you would like to learn about us, discuss our pledges, and see our planned events for 2025/26, then come along to our AGM on Tuesday, 23rd September @ 3:15pm in Miss Gill's classroom (Squirrels). We will be voting in our chair, vice chair, secretary, treasurer & many more roles. Even if you can just do one event, please come along. Thank you!
Questionnaire: We need your feedback to help us improve. It will take 2 minutes, but it will make all the difference to our RDFF team. https://forms.gle/yHok1mhNm9RMoorQ8

Greenbank Fundraising Friends
We regret to inform you that the decision has been made to close the Greenbank Fundraising Friends (PTA) at the Greenbank site. This decision does not affect the Fundraising Friends team established at our Rooksdown site.
Over the years, Fundraising Friends has played a vital role in enriching our school community by organising fun events for the children and, in the process, raising funds. They have contributed funds towards school trips, Year 6 treats, the creation of our Book Nook, and providing Easter eggs and Christmas books for the children, among other initiatives. This has only been possible due to the time, effort, and generosity of our staff and parent volunteers, for which we are incredibly grateful.
Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we have been unable to form a team of parent volunteers large enough to sustain the Friends. Without volunteers to take on leadership roles and help organise events, we cannot continue in our current form. While we understand the demands on everyone’s time, this lack of key support has led to this difficult decision.
While this is a difficult decision, and the Friends accounts are closed, we are pleased to share that the funds you have all contributed to raising will benefit all the children in the school. Our Year 6 pupils have recently received their yearbooks, along with a financial contribution towards their treat day. For pupils who will still be with us next academic year, every child will benefit from some funding towards next year's school trips. Funds are also being put towards the development of the outdoor learning space alongside the renovated outdoor classroom, ensuring a lasting investment in our pupils’ learning environment.
We sincerely regret this change and the loss of the many extra opportunities the Friends provided. If any parents or carers are interested in helping to restart the Fundraising Friends or exploring alternative ways to support the school, we would welcome your involvement. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
Thank you again for your unwavering support. We hope that, in time, we can find a way to continue enriching our school community.
As we head into the wonderful summer holidays, we wish you all a relaxing and joyful break. We know that with more free time, screens will likely play a bigger part in keeping children entertained, connected, and creative.
This is a great opportunity to reinforce healthy digital habits and ensure their online world is as safe as their offline one. Here are our top tips for a fun and safe summer online.
1. Start the Conversation (and Keep it Going)
The most important tool is open conversation. Take an interest in what they're doing online, just as you would with a new book or a park they love to visit.
Ask them to show you: What games are they playing? What videos are they watching? Who are their favourite YouTubers?
Talk about being kind: Remind them that the same rules of kindness apply online as they do in the playground.
Create an 'Uh-Oh' plan: Let them know that they can come to you, without fear of getting in trouble, if anything online ever makes them feel sad, worried, or uncomfortable.
2. Set Up for Safety
Creating a safe environment helps children to explore independently.
Check your Parental Controls: Your internet provider (e.g., BT, Sky, Virgin), as well as devices like tablets, phones, and games consoles (PlayStation, Xbox, Switch), all have built-in parental controls. These can help filter content and manage spending.
Set Time Limits: Agree on daily or weekly screen time limits together. Tools on Apple and Android devices can help you manage this automatically.
Keep it Public: Where possible, encourage children to use their devices in shared family spaces, such as the living room or kitchen, rather than in their bedrooms.
3. Find the Balance
Summer is about making all kinds of memories, both on-screen and off.
Plan screen-free time: Intentionally plan daily activities that don't involve a screen, such as playing in the garden, taking a trip to the park, reading a book, or playing a family board game.
Lead by example: Consider your own screen habits. Putting your phone away during mealtimes or family activities shows them the importance of being present.
Quick Reminders for the Children
Think Before You Share: Never share personal information, such as your full name, school, or address, online.
Keep Passwords Private: Like a toothbrush, your password is meant for you alone.
If in Doubt, Shout Out: If you see anything that upsets you, tell a trusted adult straight away.

Follow the Water Safety Code
Summer is a time for fun and relaxation, but it’s also important to stay vigilant around water. Warmer weather is directly linked to a rise in accidental drownings, making water safety more crucial than ever. Follow the code:
STOP & THINK: Look for the dangers. Always read the signs and understand their meaning.
STAY TOGETHER: Never go near water on your own. Always have an adult with you.
FLOAT: If you fall in, float or swim on your back and stay calm. Throw something that floats to someone who has fallen in.
CALL 999 or 112: In an emergency, call 999 or 112 (for the coastguard)
