Frequently Asked Questions

Below you will find answers to commonly asked questions regarding the LEAD academy.

General

Do I have to commit to all four years?

The LEAD academy is a four-year program of study; we do ask that you commit to the entirety of the first year. Our goal is to win you over during that time! You do have the option to change your mind at the end of the first, second, or third year.

Can I join the academy during my sophomore or junior year?

Yes. However, students should keep in mind that they will be held to the same standards as students who have started out in the academy. In order to succeed, students who join mid-way through the academy may need to devote extra time to studying and may need tutoring on concepts covered in the previous year(s).

What are the requirements to apply?

You need to: (1) Have a good work ethic, and (2) let your counselor know you would like to join LEAD or apply online.

What if I'm not sure that I want to be an engineer or designer?

No problem. In today's technological society, it is advantageous to learn some engineering basics and take some upper-level math and science courses, regardless if you decide to pursue a career in engineering/design.

What if I'm not good with computers?

Part of our job is to teach you and to provide you with plenty of opportunities to get better. Plus, we get to do some really cool stuff with computers!

Academic

Do I have to take the math and science courses listed in the curriculum for the academy?

Yes. All students are required to start in Integrated Math I or higher their freshman year. You will need a solid background in math, chemistry and physics to be ready for engineering at the college level. Students should note that since math and science are an integral part of the field of engineering, these subjects will be studied more rigorously in the LEAD academy than in traditional curriculum.

How much homework is there in the engineering courses?

Surprisingly, there isn't nearly as much homework as you will have in normal academic courses. We try to do most of the engineering and design activities in class so that you can focus on your other classes at home.

Can I do the LEAD academy and other AP courses?

Yes. You may take as many AP courses in as many subjects as you, your parents/guardians, your counselor, and your teachers decide is appropriate.

How do I fit in all the classes that I want to take?

Well, you just might have to make some tough decisions. You might also look at creative solutions, like taking classes during zero or seventh period, through CVUSD's virtual high school, or at a local community college. You are encouraged to think long-term and decide which classes will be of the greatest benefit to you once you leave high school.

Can I be a part of two academies?

No. Academies are designed to be four-year, subject specific pathways. Each academy has a specific curriculum and requirements that students need to fulfill each year. There is simply not enough room in your schedule to accommodate the needs of more than one academy.

College

Will the LEAD academy help prepare me for college?

Absolutely! Preparing students for college was a primary motivation for starting the academy. The LEAD academy is designed to help students succeed in college by developing a strong engineering foundation in high school which will provide students with the tools and knowledge they will need for college-level engineering coursework.

Will the LEAD academy help me get a scholarship?

We certainly hope so, but we can't guarantee anything. Teachers and counselors for the LEAD academy will notify students of scholarship opportunities that are available to them and can help provide letters of recommendation for students who need them.

Can I earn college credit for courses in the LEAD academy?

Three engineering courses are currently articulated with Chaffey Community College. Introduction to Design students can receive credit for DRAFT 20 (3 units), Principles of Engineering students can receive credit for EGTECH 12 (4 units), and Civil Engineering and Architecture students can receive credit for DRAFT 50 (3 units) by passing each course with a "B" or better. Students may also earn college credit through Advanced Placement exams.
