What is Academic and Career Planning?

Beginning in the 2017-2018 school year, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) required all Wisconsin Public Schools to implement an academic and career planning program to students in grades 6-12. Wisconsin DPI has broken the academic and career planning process down into four general steps:

KNOW: Who am I? Identify your interests, skills, and goals.

EXPLORE: What do I want to do? Explore careers and educational opportunities.

PLAN: How do I get there? Set check points to ensure that you stay on track. For example, take courses that align with your goal and/or participate in job shadows.

GO: Do it! Check back on your plan, reflect and modify as needed!

Academic and Career Planning lessons are infused in the curriculum at Chilton Middle School. Students utilize Xello (a tool provided by Wisconsin DPI) to research careers, investigate their learning styles, and learn about their skills and interests. Our Academic and Career Plan at Chilton Middle School is further enhanced by our 5th Grade Cub Talks and 8th Grade Tiger Talks.

5th Grade Cub Talks

5th Grade Cub Talks are designed to aid in the transition from elementary to middle school. It is at this meeting, that students first start assessing their learning styles and potential career interests. Students are encouraged to "explore" through participation in extra curricular activities. Parents are encouraged to participate in these meetings, in whichever format is most convenient for them.
