Literacy

Within Chiltern Learning Trust, we believe that Literacy lies at the very heart of every school and indeed curriculum. Multidisciplinary literacy is our aim, where every teacher ensures that each student is equipped with the necessary skills to empower them to be proficient, confident and eloquent in: speaking; reading; writing and listening, across every subject. Research shows that literacy skills are a key factor in later life outcomes (EEF; Secondary Literacy Evidence Reviews: 2019) and crucially, the responsibility of every teacher.

‘I'm convinced that if we get our reading strategies right in schools, we will see a marked improvement in GCSE outcomes in future years, not to mention all sorts of other positive outcomes such as improved mental wellbeing and a much broader cultural understanding’

D.Connor - Headteacher, CHSB

The Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) has a wealth of academic research and recommendations for improving reading, writing, speaking and listening across each key stage. Here are three key links to some of their many reports into Literacy.

WHOLE SCHOOL WRITING APPROACHES

Across CLT, sharing, training and supporting all teachers to promote the importance of Literacy across the curriculum is crucial. This ensures that effective literacy strategies are implemented and embedded within our schools. Here are two recent CPD videos, taken from our Challenge Partners: Chiltern Hub programme, run by N.Goodman. These two videos showcase Reading and Writing Strategies from incredible leaders within our Trust.

In this video, Nicola and Henry explore how at CHSB they have created a culture and ethos surrounding whole school reading. From Tutor Time Programmes to Reading lessons, the successful implementation, monitoring and progress of the students is beyond impressive.

In this video, Amy, from Chiltern, explores the importance of writing across the curriculum. She considers the best practice writing strategies according to research and then finally, whole school writing approaches to ensure writing is effective within and indeed across a whole school.

"For everyone, everywhere, literacy is, along with education in general, a basic human right.... Literacy is, finally, the road to human progress and the means through which every man, woman and child can realize his or her full potential."
