4. What is Full Subject-Based Banding?

Full Subject-Based Banding (FSBB) is part of MOE’s ongoing efforts to nurture the joy of learning in students and develop multiple pathways to cater to their different strengths and interests. At CHIJ Secondary, we implemented FSBB for the Sec 1 cohort in 2022. Under this system, each lower secondary class will have a mixture of students from the various academic streams. These mixed form classes create more opportunities for students of different backgrounds and academic courses to learn and play together, enabling them to build meaningful friendships and learn to value different perspectives. Students in the same form class will follow a common curriculum for seven subjects (Art, Character & Citizenship Education, Design & Technology, Drama, Food & Consumer Education, Music, and Physical Education) and will be banded according to their readiness for the other subjects.

On top of the existing provisions for SBB for English Language, Mother Tongue Languages, Mathematics and Science, the Humanities subjects (Geography, History and Literature in English) will be offered at a higher level to eligible students of the N(A) and N(T) streams at the end of Sec 1.
