What is a Speech Language Pathologist?
Speech Language Pathologists evaluate, diagnose, and treat a variety of communication disorders. These include the following:
Articulation- the way we say our speech sounds
Phonology- the speech patterns we use
Fluency- stuttering
Receptive Language- difficulty understanding language
Expressive Language- difficulty using language
Pragmatic Language- social communication; the way we speak to each other
Alternative & Augmentative Communication- use of low-tech or high-tech equipment to communicate (i.e. sign language, pictures, iPad with communicative system)
If you think your child has a delay in one of these areas, please contact me via email or contact the Department of Special Services (mcarlton@chesterfieldschool.com). Any concerns with language skills must go through the Child Study Team. Below are some resources to on "typical" communication development, but every child is different!
About me
I received both my undergraduate and graduate degree from Stockton University. I have been a speech language pathologist at Chesterfield Elementary School since 2018. I am a Certified Autism Specialist and have received extensive training in Gestalt Language Processing through Meaningful Speech. In my spare time, I love spending time with my family, friends, and my two dogs, as well as drinking coffee and reading books. I look forward to working with your child!
