What we are learning in 4F!

Reading Unit 2 Informational

A Study in Structure/Organization

Students will consider the organizational structure of an informational text by using specific information directly from the text to recount what happened and why as they explain events, procedures, ideas, or concepts in the text.  After establishing the text’s explicit meaning, students will identify the main idea.  They will examine how an author introduces and develops this idea through key details.  Students will summarize the text.

Writing Unit 2 Opinion

A Study in Structure/Organization & Communication

In this unit students will learn a variety of more sophisticated strategies for introducing their topics. They will learn to provide reasons to support their opinions, as well as facts and details to elaborate on these reasons. Students will take a big step toward learning how to organize their work. They will learn different ways to arrange their reasons and evidence.

Math Unit 3 Extending Operations of Fractions

In this unit, students will deepen their understanding of how fractions can be composed and decomposed, and learn about operations on fractions.  Students will add and subtract fractions with like denominators, multiply a whole number times a fraction as it represents multiple equal groups, create and analyze line plots, and reason the equivalence of tenths and hundredths.

Science Unit 2 Energy Works

Energy is a central idea in science; however, it is a complex and somewhat abstract topic that students may struggle to grasp. Energy Works incorporates phenomena and provides opportunities for students to manipulate materials while exploring concepts related to energy. Students study different kinds of energy, the transfers and transformations that occur between them, and how energy is used in the world around them. Inquiry-based investigations encourage students to make claims supported with evidence and reasoning, elaborate upon their observations, and design their own experiments.
