1st-3rd Grades

Here's the challenge: Using a combination of picture books and chapter books, students will complete one of these Reading Challenges that includes mystery, historical fiction, animal adventures, Newberry Medal winning books, biography, other non-fiction, fairy tales, graphic novels, and magazine articles. Parents should encourage independent reading when possible, but should certainly read to their children as much as needed and enjoyed. Explore our own world and history while also diving into new worlds of wonder! Students who register for the CHESS Summer Reading Program will receive a small reward upon turning in completed challenges.

*Don't be intimidated by this list - most of these genres can be found in picture book form, and almost all of the "chapter book" requirements can also be fulfilled by early chapter book formats. However, 20 or 30 book editions are available from Mrs. Meester if needed.

*These lists are a bit shorter than the 1st grade challenge, with the assumption that students will be reading slightly longer books and more independently. However, please still read to your students if they need it! Please still use whatever combination of picture books, readers, and chapter books that meets their reading level. A 20 book edition is available in the library for students who might still find this overwhelming, as is a 40 book edition for those who want more!*
