Congratulations again to Julie Barker for being honored as a Silver Jubilee recipient for participating in the ECE program for 25 years! And to Gina Corrado who was selected from over 1,800 teachers as UConn’s Instructor Award for Excellence in Course Instruction!
Best Buddies and SNHS combined to make ice cream! A fun and delicious time was had by all!
CPS Chief Operating Officer, Vincent Masciana, and Food and Nutrition Services Director, Erica Biagetti, met with the AP/ECE Environmental Science classes this week to discuss school sustainability and the school lunch program. Students are preparing a proposed school sustainability plan and discussed their thoughts with the two administrators. Students found the visit very interesting and useful, particularly in understanding some of the economic aspects of the sustainability analysis as well as the scope of government regulation of the school lunch program.
This week, two representatives from the Yale Center for British Art presented to the Black and Latino Studies class. Senior conservationist Jessica David discussed the work currently being done to research the way people of color are represented in British Art around the world and the efforts being made to discover their identities and to tell their stories. Her fellow conservator, Kendall Francis, discussed her research of the color indigo, its historical connection to slave plantations in Haiti and the role indigo plantation laborers played in the Haitian Revolution. Students had a chance to interact with the pigment and create their own indigo oil paint and even try out some painting techniques!
The Boy’s Volleyball club team earned the program’s 300th win with their triumph over Masuk HS.
Members of the Cheshire High School Band and Orchestra traveled to Boston to perform in the Festivals of Music adjudication festival on Saturday 4/20. In addition to the performances, students had time in Quincy Market, ate dinner at Fire + Ice restaurant in Boston, and saw The Blue Man Group! On Sunday, we attended the awards ceremony for the festival where the band earned 3rd place and a rating of Excellent, and the orchestra did not compete but earned a rating of Good! Earlier this month, the Chorus traveled to Virginia Beach to compete and earned an Excellent rating. As a whole the students were respectful and a strong representation of Cheshire. Their performances were inspiring and entertaining, and we are so proud of their work and how far they've come!
CHS English teacher Donna Carbone's second book, Of Lies and Honey, will be released on April 23. It's a compelling story about mothers and daughters with some beekeeping woven in.
Starting on April 4th, students of Latin and Italian took an 11 day tour of Italy. They experienced the language, the culture, the history all the way from Venice down to the Amalfi coast. Students hiked Mt. Vesuvius, saw the Colosseum, Roman Forum, Pompeii, rode on gondolas, made their own pizza, and made wishes in the Trevi Fountain! It was an amazing learning experience in travel which brought the study of both cultures to life. The students had a blast, the chaperones had a blast, and the whirlwind tour of Italy sparked the travel bug in many students! Much thanks to all the students who came, and of course, to Frau Haase and Magistra Torrence for helping chaperone with Professoresa Countryman and Magistra Oparowski!
Over the April break, seven students accompanied by Ms. Yager went to explore the wonders of Costa Rica. There they were immersed in the local culture and amazing biology and Earth science of the country. Activities included visiting Buena Vista lodge to learn about farm sustainability and to also soak in the hot springs and go zip lining. Other activities included snorkeling, Rincon de la Vieja National Park to see volcanic activity with a hike around the park, and Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge to see monkeys, sloths, caimans, and a variety of other wildlife. They also visited pineapple and coffee farms and did additional activities too numerous to mention.
Junior CHS student, Malvika Sawant, who spoke at the New Hampshire primary conference field trip, spoke (unprompted) at Congresswoman Jahana Hayes and Senator Christopher Murphy's event a few weeks ago at Elim Park. Malvika has received a lot of great feedback and praise from Cheshire residents and might even land the high school internship at Jahana Hayes' office for the summer.
