Students in this introductory class explore and develop an understanding of their own creative resources.
Through improvisation games and rehearsed performances, students use props, costumes, movement and blocking to express imagination, setting, story and characters.
They learn audience etiquette and basic stage terminology as they collaborate to plan and perform creative dramatizations.
Students participate in mock auditions, small group scenes and readers’ theatre pieces. Additionally, students learn about theatre history and its influence on contemporary culture.
Drama 6 is not a required prerequisite. Students in this course develop skills in scene work and improv.
Students experiment with pantomime, analyzing backstory and subtext for scene development.
They learn audience etiquette and basic stage terminology as they collaborate to plan and perform creative dramatizations.
Students will explore costume and make up and create an original a radio play.
Drama 8 - Students in this class explore and develop an understanding of their own creative resources. The class will perform scenes in various styles and work on characterization and scene analysis. Topics may include Commedia Dell’arte, physical comedy, original scenes and playwriting, Shakespeare, technical theatre, and improv.
Drama 8 Advanced - (Prerequisite - one semester of drama, participation in West’s after school theatre program, or participation in an outside theatre program.)
This class is designed for students who are passionate about theatre, want a challenge, and/or plan to pursue theatre after middle school.
Students will work extensively on monologue and auditioning techniques.
They will explore advanced scene work and analysis.
Other topics may include creating original scenes and monologues, exploring classical and contemporary drama, Shakespeare, and musical theatre.
