My name is Peter Philpott, and I'm a rising junior News Editor and Outreach Coordinator with the official newspaper of Cherry Creek High School, the Union Street Journal. Since fifth grade, my mind has been fixated on a future, an education, and a career in the journalistic field. Only in these past few years, my years on the Journal, have I found myself engrossed in news reporting. I dream of being a political investigative journalist and I've become experienced investigating controversial issues. I've already reported on racism and antisemitism in our schools, women's rights and abortion, the Israel-Hamas conflict, and gun violence in American schools. At the same time, I also report on small-scale issues; the primary job of a school publication is to report on their...school! I have been honored with national awards from the National Scholastic Press Association and the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, along with several more accolades from the Colorado Student Media Association (CSMA).
I have dedicated a large majority of my time to advance the USJ's coverage and skill. My position as Outreach Coordinator in the USJ gives me the opportunity to connect to other newspapers, businesses, and families in the community to grow our reach and get our coverage in the hands of more people. I have worked with many newer writers to introduce them to the interviewing and research process, so that future generations of journalists at Cherry Creek can carry on the celebrated and extraordinary history of our publication. I am so grateful for my editors in my high school career, and I want to be that same mentor to our journalists. And, like all writers, I have found ways to integrate my personal passions into my work. My longtime fandom of baseball became the basis for Peanuts and Cracker Jack, my column where I delve into the issues surrounding 'America's Pastime.' The column was awarded CSMA's 1st Place Column in 2023. When I'm not working on journalism, you can find me studying for a chemistry exam, taking artistic photography, or watching a Michael Schur comedic TV franchise.
