See the academic honesty section below regarding acceptable use of artificial intelligenc (AI). Note the following for my own use of AI as your instructor:
I may use AI to assist with an investigation of potential academic dishonesty. But I will make sure that no prompts to AI are personally identifiable. And any evidence gatherered in this manner will not constitute proof of AI use on its own.
I use AI to generate images (I also use open-source images such as Pixabay) for decorative purchases (not to convey physics content).
I have not used AI to generate any other course materials such as documents, homework or test questions, discussion prompts, podcasts, or slideshows. If I choose to do so in the future, then I will vet them thoroughly and provide attribution.
I will not use AI to reply to any communication from you (discussion, email, etc.) with the exception of possibly hitting the "Tab" when I agree with the suggestion.
I will not use AI to grade any of your work or even assist me in such work.
Two of the main reasons students choose to cheat are pressure to do well and feeling overwhelmed. If you are experiencing anxiety and overwhelm to a degree that you are tempted to cheat, please communicate with me or a counselor (see below) to get help.

Violations of academic honesty in my classes include the following:
Receiving help on labs or written homework without attribution
Sources of help that must be cited include other instructors, lab partners, tutors, websites, relatives, and friends. You do not need to cite me, the textbook, discussion on Canvas, or course documents as a source (though of course you are welcome to do so).
Two or more students producing identical or extremely similar homework, quizzes, or exams
During an exam or quiz, doing any of the following: using any human help (exceptions: computer technical support and disability services); using any communication device or program such as a cell phone, e-mail, or chat; or browsing an unauthorized website
Obtaining quiz questions, exam questions, or homework solutions from anyone except me
Sharing quiz questions, exam questions, or homework solutions with anyone except tutors or other Chemeketa employees
Using chegg.com or a similar website (where human experts solve problems for you) at any time, even with attribution
A few clarifications include the following:
You are not banned from using AI on your homework or discussion, though I strongly discourage its use. Note the following:
You must cite the fact that you used it (just as you must cite any other website).
You must accept the significant risk that it will give you wrong answers. You are much better off using office hours, discussion, or properly vetted sources for help with homework.
You are banned from using it on quizzes and exams, just as you are banned from using any website besides Canvas.
It is not a violation of academic honesty for lab partners to produce identical data, calculations, and graphs for lab reports.
You should assume that all work is open-book and open-note unless explicitly stated otherwise.
Every grade is subject to review and revision based on a violation of academic honesty, regardless of the time frame.
You may share the syllabus, tip sheets, and videos with whomever you wish. You may record or photograph me or my work during lecture or office hours for your personal use only.
You may not share my tests, homework questions, or solutions; this is considered a violation of academic honesty unless you are working with a tutor or another Chemeketa employee. You may not share writing, recordings, or photographs of other students during scheduled classes, office hours, or discussion without their permission; this is a violation of their privacy and I consider it classroom misconduct: chemeketa.edu/students/student-rights-responsibilities/
I recognize that physicists have a shameful history of marginalizing and excluding people and their achievements, even more so than in many other fields. It is one of my professional goals to increase the diversity of the people taking physics courses, earning physics degrees, and becoming professional physicists. And I hope to create a welcoming, inclusive, and respectful environment for all of my students. This includes respecting your pronouns (should you wish to share them) and name (regardless of official records).
