If you are in fully online GS 104, then you are required to take the exams with a proctor.
Consult the list of pre-approved proctors and locations below. If the list does not suit your needs, then you will need to send me a message on Canvas (during the term) or email (before the term) to propose an alternate proctor and site as soon as possible. You should not assume that a proctor for a different class (at Chemeketa or anywhere else) will be allowed in this class; I am the final authority on this. Here are some guidelines:
Generally acceptable proctors are me during office hours, testing centers at a regionally accredited college, and educational officers of a military installation or correctional facility.
Possibly acceptable proctors are college employees, librarians, and K-12 educators. You must demonstrate that a generally acceptable proctor is not possible in order to use these.
Unacceptable proctors are those with whom you have a personal, professional, or academic relationship. An academic relationship is defined as an adviser or someone you assist with teaching or research.
Make appointments with the proctor for all of the exams for the term. Note that I will make exceptions if either you or your proctor can't schedule this far in advance. But please keep in mind that proctoring services get very busy around finals week. Some proctors require that I provide them instructions before they will take appointments. Let me know if this is the case.
During the term, you will be directed to fill out a form regarding your proctoring arrangements. A link will be provided on Canvas.
If you do not complete the form, then you will not be allowed to take the exams and you will be given a zero. It doesn't matter if the information is listed below. It doesn't matter if you told me in a previous term. It doesn't matter if you sent me an email or message. You must fill out the form.
If you need to change your appointment(s), then you must send me a message on Canvas and fill out the form again.
Gather notes (print any electronic documents you might need) and books (bring the entire text) to assist you in the exam. The exams are open-book and open-note. You may use a calculator. Do not bring a cell phone, computer, or other potential communication device to the exam.
Take the exam at your appointed time and place.
If you are taking the exam with a proctor other than me, then follow these instructions as well:
In the event of a dispute with a proctor over the rules for the exam that you think could negatively impact your grade, DO NOT even begin the exam. Contact me as soon as possible so that we can resolve this.
Note that in the event of a suspicion of academic dishonesty, I may share your work with your proctor as part of the investigation. And I may also decide to ban a proctor during the middle of the term if I am not satisfied with their work for any reason, even if I have previously approved an appointment.
The purpose of the proctor is to verify the identity of the student, document start and end times, and assure that the student does not communicate with anyone during the exam.
I will email you a PDF of the exam for you to print out for the student(s).
Email me (erik.jensen@chemeketa.edu) copies of the finished work along with the start and finish times.
Please let me know in advance if you need me to fill out a form.
There are due dates. But the student, not the proctor, will be responsible for meeting them. If a student claims to have been given an extension, then you should believe them.
Please verify the student's ID.
There are time limits for the exams (90 minutes for the midterm and 110 minutes for the final).
Students are allowed to use calculators, books, and paper (notes and scratch) they bring with them.
Students may not possess additional devices with communication capabilities such as cell phones or tablets.
Students may take reasonable breaks during the exams provided they leave their materials behind. The test clock will remain running during breaks. Please document any breaks of inordinate length or frequency.
You may make adjustments to the written rules as necessary in your professional opinion. For example, if there is a student with a documented disability, then you should obey any accommodation letter from Chemeketa or the student's home institution. Or if a fire alarm disrupts the test, then you can stop the clock. Please contact me if you make adjustments.
Please collect all paper the students have written upon at the end of the exam (they may keep their notes). Then please keep this paper for two weeks after the exam.
You do not need to contact me unless there are questions regarding the above requirements or technical difficulties during the exam.
I thank you for your assistance. Without you, these classes would not be possible.
Note to proctors: If I send you an e-mail, then you are now an approved proctor and may proctor any exams for any of my students.
Simply fill out the form on Canvas to set an appointment.
