President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. This offically freed all slaves in southern states. However, it took two years for all slaves to be freed.
This lesson from PBS Kids has some good videos in it, especially for grade 4. We recommend going through the lesson and videos yourself to determine what you might use in your classroom.
