2021 CHS
Spring Athletics

From the Desk of Suni K. Blackwell, Director of Athletics and Activities

The Cheltenham High School spring season is upon us. Practices / tryouts began on Monday, March 8. Sports and clubs participating in the spring season are as follows:

Getting Started

  1. Coaches and student-athletes (along with one family member) must complete the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) COVID-19 Training for Student-Athletes before starting practices.

    • Email your completed COVID-19 training certificates to the coach of the sport you'd like to play. If the training isn't completed, students-athletes will not be able to participate in practices/try-outs.

  2. Students interested in a spring sport must complete the athletics interest form as soon as possible. Coaches will inform students of arrival times for practices/try-outs on March 8.

  3. All student-athletes must complete the PIAA Comprehensive Physical (10 sections) prior to practices/try-outs. Physical must be completed June 1, 2020, or later. We have a NEW paperless system in place where you must upload your completed PIAA physical forms. The student-athlete code of conduct will be part of the required paperwork and is available on this site as well. Pre-participation "Getting Started" Guide>

  4. Student transportation will not be provided for practices during virtual learning, but transportation will be provided for games.

Practice Protocols

The health and safety of our students and staff remain a high priority, as we continue to receive guidance from the CDC and the Pennsylvania Department of Health. As new information regarding COVID-19 emerges, we will keep you informed and adjust our plan accordingly. This plan is only as good as those who will be responsible for its implementation and supervision. The success of this plan and the safety of our student-athletes is dependent on adhering to these guidelines. In preparing for our students’ return, here are some things we need from you:

  • Prior to every practice, all coaches, staff and student-athletes must complete a COVID-19 monitoring form. A scannable QR code linked to the form will be provided, as will hard copy forms (IF NEEDED).

    • The COVID-19 monitoring form should be completed (no sooner than two hours) prior to a practice.

    • An adult family member or guardian should assist the student with completing the form.

    • Coaching staff and student-athletes may not remain on campus if the form isn’t completed

    • See below for the Athletic QR code to access the online monitoring form.

    • Downloadable COVID-19 Monitoring Form (Click to download.)

  • Students will arrive at practices 15 minutes prior to start time for screening procedures.

  • Coaches and student-athletes MUST wear face coverings at all times while on campus.

  • Coaches and students will enter through the main gymnasium entrance.

  • All parking and drop-offs will be in the CHS student parking lot.

  • Families and students must study and continuously follow the safety plan.

  • Remember to practice social distancing (at least 6-ft. apart).

If you have any questions regarding spring sports, please feel free to contact Suni K. Blackwell, Director of Athletics & Activities.

Information for the Community

The COVID-19 pandemic has presented many challenges for high school athletic & activity across the world. COVID-19 is a highly contagious illness that primarily attacks the respiratory system. COVID-19 can infect people of all ages. While it is not possible to eliminate all risk of furthering the spread of COVID-19, the current science suggests there are many steps schools can take to reduce the risks to students, coaches, and their families.

CSD’s priority is to safely return our coaches, staff and students to play during this COVID-19 pandemic. We will take the necessary precautions and recommendations from the federal, state, and local governments, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Pennsylvania Department of Health, as well as the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) and Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA). CSD realizes the knowledge regarding COVID-19 is constantly changing as new information and treatments become available. The health and safety plan recommendations will be modified as new information becomes available in order to decrease the risk of exposure for our staff, and students.

Our health and safety plan provides guidance on the reopening of CSD athletics during the COVID-19 pandemic in accordance with Governor Wolf’s Guidance for All Sports, which permits PIAA PK-12 schools to resume athletics in counties designated in the Yellow or Green phases of the Process to Reopen Pennsylvania.
