Tech vs. Trade School
Tech School
Also known as technical college, this school prepares students for specific career or trade through specialized programs.
Examples include:
Computer technology
Automotive technology
Culinary arts
Cosmetology/barbering
This a great option for those of you who want to start working right away or know you have something specific you want to do.
They sound the same, but they're not! Some people use those terms (along with vocational school) interchangeably.
Trade School: Training for manual or hands-on professions.
Think carpentry, plumbing, or welding.
Tech School: Specialized training programs for careers with practical skills.
Think barbering or cosmetology.
You should have ready:
An activity list
A personal statement
People ready to ask for letters of reference
The person to contact to get your transcript
And have your FAFSA/WASFA filled out! Lots of scholarships want this information.
If you (student) are undocumented, you will fill out to the WASFA (State Financial Aid). If not, you will fill out the FAFSA (Federal Aid)- even if your parents are not documented). You can always opt to fill out the WASFA should you choose not to share personal information with the government.
Typically on May 1st, this is the day you "commit to" which school you are going to and let them know of your decision.
Do not pay for a list. We have a whole list of options for you right above this section, and you can now even search based on category! Scroll up on this page to find more information on that.
Not necessarily! You never know what you might qualify for and it doesn't hurt to apply now, rather than scramble last minute if you do decide. Plus, a lot of scholarships require this because they want to know what financial gap they need to fill, so if you need scholarship money, you should probably fill out the FAFSA.
It depends! You can if you are actually going to a place the is licensed to teach you and can give you hours (different from just apprenticing). Most schools will also usually have information available about scholarships they offer, too.
If you are a senior, start looking a few months ahead at deadlines. For example, if it's February, start applying to scholarships with due dates in April. This will give you lots of time to plan ahead and gather the materials you need without stressing.
Now... you wait until you get your letters from each college you applied to- typically you'll get those in March, and then you can make an informed decision. Join us on Tuesday, March 4th at 6pm in the library for a presentation on how to understand your award letter! Food provided.
Those letters can be confusing! You can always come chat with Ms. Andrews in the Career Center to learn more about how to interpret this. We also offer workshops in the spring that help you understand what's going on.
Your personal statement should be able to cover most of the essays, you just might to tweak it a bit, but yes, there are some scholarships that are much more specific that will require you to write an essay. Some may even ask for a video submission or will require an interview as well. It's good to be prepared for it all!
-1500 is the number you are looking for. This means you got the total amount of federal aid (Pell Grant) possible. As for why it's negative and why it's that number... we don't know.
