A couple of tips...
*add "in the United States" to topic
*look for recent articles
*try to find something that provides background information.
Required Resource Types
Resource #1: Video from Thinkalong or from the Padlet I created with videos for non-Thinkalong topics. Padlet is linked in ILP Classroom.
Resource #2: Podcast
Resource #3: Find an article about your topic's controversy (Thinkalong or Issues & Controversies or EBSCO Points of View)
Resource #4: Article must be an overview article from Issues and Controversies that introduces controversy, discusses both sides of the controversy, and provides historical context of issue in our country including legal challenges. You MUST take notes from the following sections: Introduction, Supporters Argue, Opponents Argue, and Conclusion. There is other amazing info in the Overview section...so skim it for any you see as important, but you do not have to take notes from that section.
NOW IT IS TIME FOR YOU TO MAKE A CHOICE...WHICH SIDE OF YOUR ISSUE ARE YOU ON?
Resource #5: For this resource, you have a choice of what resource you would like to use to support your side. You want to find a credible source (not one just chock full of bias) that supports your side of the issue. You also need to look for a source that fills in any gaps of types of evidence you may need.
My Suggestion for Resource #5...an organization's website related to your topic that supports your viewpoint. You can use whole site for information for notes.
Remember...You need to provide evidence from all five areas if possible on each of your Note-Taking Forms.
IMPORTANT INFO...Resource #4 has a different note-taking form...scroll down to find it.
Info about writing your notes....
Research Question...it should be same on each page of notes
Background...be sure your background info has explanation and details. 4 bullet points...Meets the Standard and 6 is Exceeding the Standard.
Review the Evidence Map...taking the time to look at the criteria for each type of evidence required will help you stay focused.
Synthesis Question...think SCR response requirements to help you answer this question.
This activity was brought to you by Mrs. Stern during our Library visit on 2/29. These documents are due on 3/4 in Civics. You need one doc for each source.
Info about how to contemplate your sources....
Authorship...Who is the expert? How are they a voice of authority? Provide evidence to prove source is valid.
Content...you are not explaining your content. You are stating the values and points of view that are represented. Also explain what information/evidence is left out of this message.
Purpose...Describe the goal of the source. Is it to inform the reader or the pursuade them to think one way or another. Provide evidence.
Information for Resource #4...Article must be an overview article from Issues and Controversies that introduces controversy, discusses both sides of the controversy, and provides historical context of issue in our country including legal challenges. You MUST take notes from the following sections: Introduction, Supporters Argue, Opponents Argue, and Conclusion. There is other amazing info in the Overview section...so skim it for any you see as important, but you do not have to take notes from that section.
There is a video linked in the Resources Section to show how to use Issues and Controversies if needed.
