"Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life."
—Pablo Picasso
Prior to Cherry Hill, I taught in the School District of Philadelphia and a charter school in Trenton. In September of 2004 I join the Cherry Hill Public Schools as an art teacher at Cherry Hill High School West. During my time there, I taught Photography, 3-D Arts, Foundations of Art, IB Art, AP Art Studio, and AP Art History.
In September of 2014 I transitioned to a art position at the elementary level, with Joseph D. Sharp as my home school. Through my nine years in this role I have been fortunate to work with a large number of students throughout our district, including students at Horace Mann, Johnson, Bret Harte, Barton and Kingston.
When presented with the option to transition back to the High School East, I felt especially fortunate. Very few educators have the opportunity to build relationships with students as they first begin their schooling experience and then also see many of the same students mature into young adults and move beyond the school system.
I look forward to fostering a love for the arts in all of the students that will be joining my classes this year. I'm also excited to connect with the East community throughout various activities. During my time at West, I was actively involved with student activities. I was an advisor for the Class of 2009, Yearbook Advisor, Business Manager for the Spring Musical, One Acts Play Advisor and PAVAS Advisor.
Personal Philosophy
I firmly believe that art is for everyone. The idea that someone is born "an artist" or is "not good at art" are misconceptions that I try to debunk. There are some who love art and who love to create, while others may not have that same motivation, but every student can find a place for art and creativity in their life, if they desire.
My own personal work as an artist is something that is always evolving. Photography has always been a primary outlet for my creativity. I love most, the way in which the medium has evolved due to the advancements in the digital field, and yet it is still deeply rooted in the core concepts of the darkroom. While photography has been a dominant medium in my art, I find myself most inspired by varying the media I work with. I especially love sculpture, watercolor painting, oil pastels and printmaking techniques. I find it refreshing to revisit a medium that I may have taken a pause from because I come back to it with a fresh perspective.
