3D Modeling & Animation

This is the very first model I made in 3ds max. The snowman is a simple model made out of only primitives, but it is all I can do back then. I think the tools learned in this unit are the most important over all. Primitives are easy to use and also important, because without them lots of the advanced tools can't be used. What I really like about his snowman is that it is totally made out of boxes, balls, and cones, but it still looks like a snowman that people will make in real life.

This model is made based on a bag charm of the character Toothless in the movie How to Train Your Dragon. When I was making it I faced a lot of challenges on getting the shapes correct. One of the biggest challenges is that the head shape of the charm is not totally round. To fix the problem, I used edit poly to create a general shape of the head and used a proboolean to cut out the flat part. In addition, I really enjoyed the process of starting a project from thinking and choosing what I want to do for the next few weeks, and eventually form a product that I feel proud for.

I made these shots in the unit where we learned about different types of lights and cameras. I like these because I can use what I learned to imitate a movie scene with lights and camera placing. I really like the idea of using lights, cameras, and position of characters to set up the vibe for the scene. For instance, darker scenes, or less light can be used to emphasize a sad or serious vibe. Bright scenes often represent some sort of happiness and refreshing. The technique that I learned in this project can help me adjust the setting of the scene so it somehow matches what the scene is trying to tell.
UV mapping, specifically unwrap UVW, is what I learned from this project. This piece is quite important because organizing the seams of a UV map, especially for a more complicated shape, can be hard and lead to a lot of orientation when adding texture to it. I practiced creating different types of UV maps and adding texture with bitmap to form the texture of Indiana Jones. Those tools can be used in future projects for applying texture and reducing orientation.

Rigging and setting constraints of movements are mostly focused in this project. creating bones and pivot control are very helpful during the animation stage; it allows me to adjust movements faster and without orientation. I really enjoyed this piece because I can develop a better understanding when making creative poses, it helps me have a better vision for what different constraints do. For any future projects, I'll know how to use those tools to rig a character before joining them for animation.

From this piece, I learned and practiced how to create an animation with different tools. And I've been running into a lot of problems when creating it, like the movement of the character looking weird or separate movements of body parts that aren't running on the same timeline. Finishing this project challenge and improving my skill of adjusting parameters and speed of setting keyframes. Those tools and techniques will be used in every future animation.
