SGA Elections Lead Into ‘Homecoming Season’
By: Carter Lovelady
Although Carrboro’s Student Government Association (SGA) has already done many events this year, the main focus for the new group of senators is this year’s Homecoming Dance. With less than a month to go until the big dance, all members of SGA are working extremely hard to get the student body excited and ready for the week of festivities.

Ms. Shaw is the faculty advisor for SGA this year. According to her, it is ‘Homecoming Season’ for the students. Even though they have already helped with many events this year (including Jaguar Jump-In, read more HERE), the focus has shifted to the upcoming dance.
“We have already completed a handful of events, including Senior Sunrise, Jaguar Jump-In and elections,” Ms. Shaw said. “Right now our big focus is homecoming.”

With the focus being homecoming in these coming weeks, many of the government officers have started to make large posters to promote the dance. Sasha Page, a freshman senator (pictured left), said that the posters are one of the things that SGA has worked on since the election results came out.
“I am very excited,” she said. “We started doing the posters.”
As a Senior Senator, Ana Mesarba de Almedia advocated for a change from the ‘standard’ spirit week before homecoming. As a first-year senator in her last year at Carrboro, she wanted to switch it up a little bit.
“I am glad that I was able to fight for a culture-inclusive spirit week, since I feel like we always have the same events,” she said. “Most of the time, it doesn’t include the large Hispanic community that we have in the school, so having a World Cup Day instead of Basketball Jersey Day, I’ve been meaning to do that for a long time.”
The theme for spirit week, the week before homecoming, will be ‘Music Mayhem’ this year. Students will be able to vote for their choice of a theme for Monday. Tuesday will be ‘tropical’ themed, with Wednesday being based off of Y2K-style music. Thursday will be World Cup Day. Friday will be Classic-Country, and Saturday’s dance will be a semi-formal ‘Club’ theme. You can purchase your ticket to the dance either on GoFan or in-person during lunch.
