After the schedule had been announced, the district and the admin decided to change some things around after 24-25 school year had ended but it led to confusion and wondering why they would change the finals exam policy. When the 25-26 school year started, there was an assembly during the first week of school when our Interim Principal Mr. Mureño talked about how the Finals Exams Policy had changed because of the 4x4 block. Everyone was shocked, and our freshman class was especially confused since it's their first year at CHS. But mainly, the freshman class was wondering why it changed over summer without them knowing. Since there were a lot of changes at Carrboro, like new teachers and an entirely new schedule (4x4 block), of course the policy needed to change too to accommodate for those weird shifts. The last final exam policy was only if you missed eighteen absences for each class and since the old schedule was seven periods it will work during that time. Since CHS is now in a new block schedule the final exams policy won't work very well so they decided to change it a little bit. The students who were at Carrboro last year think it's unfair that they have to take their final exams after missing six days of one specific class depending on semester one and semester two.
Many students at CHS are very confused about the policy, because it's not only new to students who were previously attending CHS, yet it's totally unheard of for new students who just transitioned from middle school to high school. They never heard about the final exams, so normally they have look up to upper classmen (Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors) for guidance, unfortunately this is the first year in which they seem to be just as lost. The students have very strong opinions about the policy being changed; they are infuriated by it. "I feel like I should be more forgiving when it comes to absences, especially excused ones. I don't think that excused absences should be counted toward six allowed absences because you never know what someone is going through", said CHS Sophomore Violet Rempher. That opinion is from one of three people from different grades at CHS who decided to speak up for the finals exam policy.
Some students don't think that it will be helpful and will lead to a lot of complications during the time of school. During the fall semester everybody is getting sick and the district shouldn’t be able to force them to go to school while in an unhealthy state, it’s unethical that the students are going to school even though they are sick and plus the district can’t afford to lose any absences because of the students being sick and etc . Half the students of CHS are athletes and they are getting worried because they have to leave early for their games that are far away from CHS and they will miss content or any test they have for one their classes for their games and they are worried on taking the finals exams, or they are going to appointments, but regardless everyone is getting worried about their absences increasing.“It’s unfair because the flu is in the spring semester and the fall semester and there's six days and they take more days in the semester,” said CHS senior Alys Traylor. All the students are getting concerned about getting sick during the fall semester since it’s the flu season. They think that they are going to have to take the final exams because of how long the recovery process is for the flu or any virus going around in autumn. “I think it’s unfair and inconsiderate,” said Rempher. Students at CHS think it is not fair that they didn’t know anything regarding the Final Exams Policy’s transformation. When we all entered school and had the assembly for the policy and other school-related topics, every student hated it. They don’t know why they would change it without everyone being aware. "No, I do not think it's okay," said CHS Junior Leslie Carreto Lazaro. "It's not fair and okay that they changed the final exams policy and not telling the students until they came to school." All the students are concerned because of all the appointments but why would they tell them and some of them read the email they send two weeks before school and they have a lot of questions about the final exams and why they put it to six days.
After five weeks of being in school, every students at CHS has an opinion about it. Some of them hate it because it’s not fair for them and some might like it, some students really hate it because it's not helping them, it doesn’t makes sense for them and half the students at CHS really enjoy it because it’s not the same final policy as last year and it’s not the same schedule and etc but it depends on the student. “I don't like it because I feel that they think it’s helping us,” said Traylor. All the CHS students want to make a plan for the admin to share with them big changes in the future without keeping it a secret because it's not fair that they would tell them when the new school year has started, everyone would love to hear the big changes that are coming soon to the school.
