The warming weather, blooming flowers, sunshine and showers all signaled the start of spring and softball season at Carrboro High School. The team is off to a pretty good start this year, with a 9-4 win-loss record overall, and an 8-2 record in its conference of seven other teams*. The team is ranked second below South Granville (10-0).
“I think this is one of our most impressive seasons so far,” said junior catcher Madison Taylor. Other players echoed her sentiment. This season, the team has also acquired some new players, including four ninth graders, one of whom is pitcher Teagan Fitcher. She is currently leading the conference in ERA and strikeouts (2.25 and 146, respectively).
“We're kind of dominating every team that we play. I think we're doing really good as a team,” said senior outfielder Avery Lackland, who is currently leading the team in on-base percentage (0.615). “I played [in my] sophomore year. We weren't so good [back then]. So I think this is definitely a good change.”
In addition to the joy that comes with winning, players also said that two of their favorite things about being on the school softball team are getting food together from places like Chipotle, Chick-Fil-A and Cookout, to name a few, and the social dynamic.

“I like the chemistry on the team,” Taylor said. “I feel like the chemistry is more natural this year because we have more people our age. And we’ve all been going to school together for a long time, too.”
“The environment that we have as a team… is a big part [of what I like about playing school softball]”, Lackland said.
The next home game will be April 28 at 6pm against South Granville. According to the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, softball Regionals are scheduled to start on May 20, and State Championships are scheduled for May 30 and 31. Glossary:
Batting average: measures how often a player gets a hit out of all at-bats. So, a .300 batting average would mean that a player gets a hit in 30% of their at-bats.
On-base percentage: measures how often a player is on base out of all at-bats. This is different from batting average because it accounts for walks. A .500 on-base percentage, for instance, would mean that a player gets on base in 50% of their at-bats.
ERA: Abbreviation for earned run average. This statistic measures the average number of runs that a pitcher gives up over the course of nine innings pitched. A 3.00 ERA, for example, would mean that, on average, the pitcher gives up three runs per nine innings pitched. It does not account for runs that a pitcher doesn't "earn" - a run that scored on a fielding error, for instance, would not count towards a pitcher's ERA.
