Djina Alicante-Stuesse - President of the Academy
The Academy of International Studies at Carrboro High School is a one-of-a-kind program that hosts guest speakers from around the world, sponsors field trips, and cultivates a four-year course track with a global focus in classes. This school year, the Academy has hosted Mr. Ewan Oglethorpe, who has worked on humanitarian aid in southeast Asia, Mr. Johan Andruejol who moved to the U.S. from France to pursue a career in the sciences, and Ms. Jacinta Bailey, a woman from Australia who has studied gender equity, Indigenous peoples' rights, and community-led development and leadership. The program also leads trips to the Morehead Planetarium, the Ackland Art Museum, and Washington D.C. for Model UN conferences. This year, the Academy has planned a week-long trip to Peru to spend time outdoors, learn about the country's history, enjoy their food and markets, and explore the ruins of Machu Picchu (Spring 2025).
