This character was created off of the concept "An Old Projector". My animation of choice was the abandoned classroom, an animation where a character explores an abandoned classroom, when suddenly an old projector flickers to life and displays ancient notes from long past. My idea for this was an old film projector, because film is pretty old. Additionally, I really liked the idea of modeling a film projector, because it is an interesting shape. I also chose the topic because I greatly enjoy playing games, and watching movie that are set in an apocalyptic environment, and my idea for the story greatly piggybacked off of that. The story goes like this: A character is sleeping when he is suddenly struck with a vison, a vison of an old abandoned classroom, where a projector turns on, giving him a idea that the classroom holds the secrets to saving humanity.
Over all on the modeling aspect, I think I did quite well, and after this experience I can now truly say how important it is to block out your models. It is satisfying for me to look through all of the images I took while working, as displayed down in the image carousel. I additionally really love the story I set out for it, as it fits so well with the abandoned classroom feel without just being " the guy is exploring a classroom that was abandoned a while ago".
This artifact is where I create the props and scene that the animation will be in. The props I chose to create were the desks, the hanging lights, and the projector stand. For the desks I chose to model an old desk-chair combo, as those seem like they come from around the same era as the projector. For the lights I thought I would make those large warehouse lights that also seem to be popular around this time, and they would also be a good place for light to come from. For my last asset I had to decide between making a projector screen or a projector stand. I decided to make the stand as it was very easy to find projector screens online.
This artifact was mostly focused on scene building and general modeling techniques, but interestingly enough I learned about UVW mapping as well. The main focuses of the project are quite clear in the assignment: general modeling being the prop modeling, and scene creation being the assembly of everything. Interestingly, I decided to put textures on my models when I made them, and my models being non regular shapes, I learned a lot more on how to format UVW maps. Finally I learned how to use file formats and how to better import 3D models from other file types into my model. Overall, this artifact helped me solidify more complex modeling techniques among other skills like UVW mapping.
This artifact was dedicated to being able to create a mood/feel for your models using lighting techniques. For my project I decided to use an eerie and dark lighting scheme, as it fit the instructions incredibly well. I used the ceiling lights I made in artifact 2 to make the main lights of the scene, to light up the desks and bookshelves. I then created a light to emit from the projector, and added a backlight coming from the door, and another hanging light to light up the projector more. Finally I changed the colors and areas of the lights to give it a better feel, like making the light from the door blue, to contrast the rest.
