I am Nathan B, a junior attending CHHS. I was inspired to take 3D modeling and animation by one of my best friends recommending the class to me, as well as exploring a potential career in 3D modeling and/or game design. My design philosophy is fairly simple, prioritize functionality and theme over appearance. You can have a beautifully designed object but if its non-functional (i.e game models with broken collisions, or other similar issues)
it doesn't matter, or if the object doesn't fit the setting then it doesn't really matter.
My strongest skill(s) in 3D modeling has to be either Environment Design or Character modeling. The former I've only done a few times but felt as if I did a great job. The latter however, I do for the love of the game, I acknowledge im not the best at character modeling but I enjoy doing it.
I have some experience with coding and game engines, I've done some work in Unity, and done a notable amount of work on both Godot and the Source engine.
I've worked on a decent amount of projects. Mainly what I work on are school projects however I've done a few freelance projects, A standout project to highlight of mine was from a small competition in middle school to model a item from everyday use to be 3D printed. I won the competition by using Tinkercad to make a 3D rendition of a pair of airpods. On the few team projects I've worked on im usually a specialist of sorts, for all of them (excluding the school ones) I get brought on by a friend to work on some part of the project that nobody currently on the team has the skills to do.
When I start a new project, I generally follow the same creation process.
My creative process is consistent and structured, even if the starting point isn’t. Whether an idea comes from my own brainstorming or is handed to me by someone else, I begin by researching similar concepts and finished projects to understand what works and what doesn’t. From there, I move into prototyping—focusing on functionality first—before iterating on the design through testing and refinement. Finalization comes last, once the model works properly and fits its intended theme or environment.
As for inspiration, most of it comes from games and real-world design rather than pure aesthetics. I pay decently close attention to how environments are built, how characters interact with the world, and how design choices affect gameplay.
My long-term goal is to learn how to make games as a hobby. I want to keep improving my skills in modeling, character creation, and working with game engines, while collaborating on projects that let me experiment and learn. Game development is something I enjoy doing in my free time, and I plan to keep building projects purely for the experience and enjoyment of it. I've started to grow out of modding games and learning the source engine and want to aim higher.
