What is the SIT?
SIT stands for School Improvement Team. School Improvement Teams are required by North Carolina law to develop School Improvement Plans. These plans set goals to improve student performance at the school based on an examination of data. School Improvement Plans remain in effect for no more than two years.
What does the SIT do?
The SIT may deal with issues related to instruction, student performance, and climate. The SIT develops, reviews, and amends the School Improvement Plan; approves the capital and operational budget requests; solicits input from and hears the concerns of constituents about school programs; reviews the results of all relevant state and district administered surveys; provides counsel to the Board of Education on issues and policies; participates in the selection process when there is a vacancy for the position of principal at the school; advocates for schools; and serves in an advisory capacity to the principal.
Who is on the SIT?
The team is made of the school principal, assistant principal, instructional personnel, instructional support personnel, and teacher assistants assigned to the school building, as well as parents of children enrolled in the school. Representatives are elected by their respective groups (e.g., the parents of MES students or the MES staff departments).
Can I attend a meeting, and when does the SIT meet?
Yes! School Improvement Teams are considered a public body and are subject to open meeting laws. The SIT strives to use a process of continuous school improvement that involves and informs all members of the school community in this work. Staff, parents, and community members are always welcome to attend and observe the meetings. Meetings are held virtually at the school from 5-6 PM on the second Monday of every month.
How do I join the SIT?
In the spring of each school year the PTA sends an announcement requesting nominations and then distributes a ballot to all MES families. SIT parent representatives are elected for a two-year term. We particularly welcome parents from racially and economically diverse backgrounds to run for the SIT in order to ensure that our SIT reflects the diverse population of our wonderful school. If you are interested, please email the PTA President.
How do I communicate a suggestion to the SIT?
You can communicate directly with any individual on the team.
