The National Honor Society chapter of Chapel Hill High School is a duly chartered and affiliated chapter of this prestigious national organization. Membership is open to those students who meet the required standards in four areas of evaluation: scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Students are selected for membership by a majority vote of a five-member Faculty Council, appointed by the principal, which bestows this honor upon qualified students on behalf of the CHHS faculty each spring semester.
Students in grades 11 (application) and 12 (membership) are eligible for membership consideration. For the scholarship criterion, a student must have a minimum weighted cumulative GPA of 3.8. Students who meet this criterion will be invited to apply for membership once first semester grades have been stored.
Eligible students must complete and submit all three required components of the Chapel Hill High School NHS Application by the published deadline.
CHHS NHS Student Information Form
Provides the Faculty Council with details regarding a student’s leadership and service activities, school involvement, and community participation.
Applicants should thoughtfully and accurately describe their contributions, responsibilities, and impact.
CHHS NHS Recommendation Forms
Each applicant must request two recommendations: one from a CHHS staff member and one from a community member.
Recommenders complete the official online form; applicants are responsible for identifying, contacting, and confirming participation from both adults.
Recommendations are confidential, and students will not have access to the responses.
Only two recommendations per applicant will be accepted and reviewed.
CHHS NHS Applicant Essay (Google Classroom Assignment)
Applicants must respond to the official NHS essay prompt provided in Google Classroom.
Essays should demonstrate reflection on the four pillars of NHS — scholarship, service, leadership, and character — and clearly explain how the student embodies these principles.
All three components must be completed and submitted by the stated deadline (typically in March). Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.
To evaluate candidates’ character, the Faculty Council reviews:
School disciplinary and academic records, and
Faculty input submitted through official evaluation forms.
All application materials, including the Student Information Form, faculty and community recommendations, essay, and relevant records, are carefully reviewed by the Faculty Council. A majority vote is required for selection.
Candidates will be notified of their selection status according to a predetermined schedule.
Selected candidates become official members upon their participation in the formal induction ceremony held each spring at Chapel Hill High School. Once inducted, members are expected to:
Maintain a weighted GPA of 3.8 or higher,
Continue to demonstrate leadership, service, and character,
Attend monthly NHS meetings, and
Complete the required number of service/event credits as outlined in the CHHS NHS Bylaws.
Pay Chapter Dues
Failure to maintain these standards may result in disciplinary action or dismissal in accordance with Chapter Bylaws and National NHS guidelines.
