Welcome to Chapel Hill High School EMT Academy
Welcome to your EMT Class!
My name is Lewis Newman and I will be your teacher for the EMT this year at Chapel Hill High School. This letter includes my contact and course information. You can also find this information and additional course information on my webpage which is accessible through the “Teacher Webpage” tab on the school website. Please read through this information in this letter and fill out and sign the Student Information Sheet indicating that you have read the information. Please return the student information sheet and safety contract to me once complete.
Course Content: The EMT curriculum includes seven units: Foundations, Airway Management, Patient Assessment, Medical Emergencies, Trauma, Special Patient Populations and EMS Operations. Over the course of the school year, you will learn a great deal of medical applications, treatments and the main subject of patient assessment. There is a great deal of independent work.
Text: All class material will be accessible from the EMT Google classroom. We will use Google Classroom to post assignments, make announcements, and submit assignments. This process will be covered in class. Students will be supplied a MacBook/Chromebook for use in class. If you prefer a textbook, they can be purchased online. The textbook is Emergency Care and Transportation of the Sick and Injured, 12th Edition.
Class Supplies: You will need a composition notebook for note taking and a lab journal for the skill development. You will need #2 pencils, pens, markers, highlighters, a cell phone with a camera function and a calculator (The one on your cell phone is sufficient). Please have a thumb (jump/flash) drive on which you create a folder to keep copies of your work. This will allow you to use multiple computers to work on those files. Alternatively, files can be kept in a Google Drive folder, which can be accessed from any computer.
Assignments: You will have multiple assignments/labs per day and due to the project based active learning and independent study style; you will be engaged and challenged each day. It is unfortunate that we will have lots of homework due to our current situation. Many times, your homework will be what you did not complete in class. I encourage you to work hard in class. This is obviously different due to our new format. For now, a great deal of your assignments will be homework.
Grading: Grades will be determined according to the following percentages: Tests – 20%; Projects, Labs, Presentations – 40%; Quizzes – 15%; Homework – 25%.
Classroom Rules and Procedures: All school rules pertaining to dress, conduct, electronics, and food apply in the classroom and the lab. This is a lab course. Safety procedures will be explained as the course progresses. I take your safety seriously. I only have a few rules. They are the four Bs. Be on time, Be prepared, Be respectful, Be responsible. Since we are online, I will have you leave your speaker and camera on during class. If you have a reason that you must leave your camera off, I will understand, but please let me know ahead of time.
At various times throughout the course, students will be using cell phone functions such as timers, calculators, or cameras to document experiments. These should be considered exceptions to the general rule of no cell phone usage in class.
