Raise a Reader - Parents Session

As educators and parents, we often hear about the benefits of habitual reading. The strong correlations to academic achievement and math skills, and also social emotional learning (SEL) are well known. Most parents are also aware of the “Summer Slide” that can befall students who don’t read during the school breaks.

Conversely, we also know of the challenges of raising a reader with the deluge of mobile devices, as well as other social distractions and academic pressures.

Two Chatsworth students, who are avid readers, told us why they love reading, and how their parents, and other adults, support them in cultivating and maintaining this habit. Join us as Max and Jasmine help us understand how we, as teachers and parents, can support our children to develop a lifelong love for reading.

Max Issel (Y10), seated left, started in Y2 at Chatsworth East and is from Germany, Switzerland and America. His favourite books are the classics, and his favourite authors include Charles Dickens, Jules Verne and James Clavell. He loves reading because it is an easy, non-digital way of engaging his imagination and learning about the world.

Jasmine Pegg (Y10) , seated right, started in 2017 in Y10 at Chatsworth Orchard and is from both Singapore and England. Her favourite books are mystery and horror books, and her favourite authors include Stephen King and Agatha Christie. She loves reading because she feels it is an amazing way to develop vocabulary, learn valuable literary skills, and have new experiences through fictional characters.
