Direct Services for Students

Classroom Lessons

Classroom lessons address important preventative and developmental topics, including conflict resolution, bullying, academic skills, career, and personal safety, among others. Topics are determined by needs assessment data and teacher input and meet NC Essential Standards for Guidance and American School Counselors Association mindsets and behaviors. Counselors see each classroom two times each month and more if needed.

This is a general outline of what subject areas will be covered through ASCA and NC Guidance Standards:

August - Meet the Counselor

September-October : School Success

October- December : Pro-Social Skills

January-February : Critical Thinking

March-May : Career Exploration

April-May : Test Taking Skills (grades 3-5)

Small Groups

Small groups provide additional learning experiences, giving children the opportunity to build relationships, practice new skills, and learn through the support of group members. Small group topics vary widely and are determined by data and current need.

The DESSA is an assessment tool used to determine students strengths and areas where instruction is needed. This tool is used to determine which students may benefit from a small group.

Individual Counseling

Individual counseling is offered on a short term basis for a variety of concerns that may be affecting students academically. Students may see a school counselor for many reasons including: stress, study skills, family changes, bullying, and more. Sometimes students may benefit from a referral to community resources such as Communities in Schools, el Futuro or to School Based Therapy. Parents will always be contacted and will need to provide permission before referrals to other community agencies are made.
