Equity Ambassador Work 2021-2022 School Year

Chatham County Schools, through leadership, innovation, and collaboration, will provide real-world learning opportunities that prepare all students for life and success after graduation. Our diverse community will be invested, involved, and invited to create a strong culture of learning resulting in Chatham County Schools becoming a leader in education.

Team Projects

Chatham County hosted a MLK celebration on January 15th at Jordan Matthews High School. The evening celebrated many organizations in the county that work to keep Dr. King's Dream alive. Various members of the equity team attended or participated in the event.

In December of 2017 the CCS E3 Team hosted the first student equity focus groups. We talked to students at each of our traditional high schools about race, culture, social justice, and other topics impacting our youth. Students shared their thoughts about school culture and ideas for improvement. The focus groups were facilitated by the Dispute Settlement Center staff member, Will Dudenhausen.

October 2017, CCS participated in Unity Day, a day of celebrating diversity and togetherness. Check out more on Unity day on Twitter. #CCSunity

In May of 2017, Dr. Hartness presented at the Kean University Equity Thought Leaders Conference. The keynote speaker was Dr. Pedro Noguera!

In February 2017 CCS Equity Team members (Amanda Hartness and Saundra Gardner) presented at the AME Zion Education Event. We handed out books and shared tips for success in school.

January 2017 The Equity Team Community Ambassador Group met to review the equity plan and talk about ideas for community involvement.

January 2017, CCS and the Chatham Arts Council hosted Mike Wiley, who presented heartwarming stories of racial hope and courage. See his work here.

December 2016's Twitter chat was hosted by Equity Team Member, Chris Poston. He lead our district in an excellent chat about equity and social justice. Check out the chat here or visit #cchchats for more chats.

On December 1st, 2016 Equity Team members Amanda Hartness and Saundra Gardner present a professional development session on home visits as a strategy to reach all families and students.

October 2016, Our Superintendent, Dr. Derrick D. Jordan wins the West Chatham NAACP Citizen of the Year Award.

October 2016, we get a Tweet from Dr. Pedro Noguera who heard about our district's Equity Team work! So exciting!

September 2016, Equity Team member Amanda Hartness facilitated the NCASCD Twitter chat on social justice and equity.

April 2016 we held our first full group equity team meeting. The start of good things to come!
