Message from the Principal

It is hard to believe that we have come to the end of such a successful school year! I have been absolutely honored to serve as the principal at Milton Avenue School. We are so fortunate to have a group of staff members who dedicate their energy and efforts in bringing out the best in each and every child. Nothing compares to seeing the smiles on the faces of the children as they enthusiastically enter the building for the learning journey that awaits them. The parent community has been so supportive throughout the year, and it has been wonderful working in partnership to bring Milton Avenue School to new heights. It truly is a privilege to be here!

Throughout the school year, your child has learned a tremendous amount of new information and skills. Summer provides the perfect time to practice essential skills to better prepare your child for the next school year. Try keeping your child’s basic skills sharp through one of these engaging summertime activities…

Summer Scrapbook: As a family, maintain a scrapbook illustrating all of the wonderful memories or activities you share throughout the summer. Allow your child to paste photographs, write captions for pictures and illustrations, and write sentences in the scrapbook that describe some of the activities. This beautiful keepsake reinforces such skills as writing skills, reading skills, and art.

Summer Outings: Plan day trips during the summer which are meaningful and interesting for your child. There are many destinations that provide the right environment to reinforce science, history, art, and math skills. Some of these outings might include a trip to the zoo, a nature hike, a trip to the museum, or even visiting the ballpark!

Read, Read, Read: The best way to practice and increase reading fluency is by reading and rereading books. Be sure to take some time this summer to visit your local library. Very often, summer programs are offered that are of interest for multiple age groups. Try to continue the habit of reading at least 20 minutes each day.

Summer Journal: Help your child keep a summer journal. Have him/her draw or write something each day. This would be a great way to keep writing skills sharp, and it also allows the child to reflect upon a great summer when the next school year begins!

Game Night: Play board or card games that practice math skills such as counting and computation. Board games would also reinforce important social skills such as taking turns and good sportsmanship.

Many children are very excited when school is out and summer is here. By engaging them in activities that promote learning throughout the summer, we can maintain that level of excitement while reinforcing skills to better prepare them for the following school year.

As we close out the school year, I would like to wish our third grade class much success as they begin a new chapter in their lives at LAF. I would also like to wish the following staff members much health and happiness in their retirement: Maria Porfirio, paraprofessional (16 years), Melanie Hollingsworth, secretary (13 years), Carole Soder, school counselor (7 years at MAS).

Have a safe and relaxing summer!
