Counselor Corner

News from our Guidance Counselor, Carole Soder

This month our classroom lesson was based on the book -

“The Little Gift Of Nothing” by Patrick McDonnell. This is a fantastic book to read with students of all ages. It tells the story about two friends who discover that the best gift of all is each other, Spending time and making memories with people we love is far more precious than items that we purchase.

After reading the book, we created a small “gift” that the students brought home to give to a special person in their life. Have a wonderful holiday season!

Spotlight on Music

The children are ready and excited to present their Holiday Concerts in January! They have been practicing very hard to put together great performances. We ask that children dress appropriately for this special outdoor event. There are no specific color requirements.

First Grade – January 11 at 9:00 a.m.

Second Grade – January 11 at 1:30 p.m.

Third Grade – January 11 at 10:30 a.m.

We’ve had a lot of fun in Music classes so far this year!

First Grade

First grade started with learning to read quarter note and eighth note patterns. They also learned about the quarter rest, a silent beat in music. They continue to work on matching pitch while singing and will begin reading solfège pitches, called so and mi, on the music staff soon!

Second Grade

Second grade began by reviewing rhythms and pitches from last year. They recently learned about half notes and complete music math problems to review rhythm and rest durations! In addition to reviewing solfège pitches from last year, called mi, so, and la, second graders will soon learn about the tones, do and re!

Third Grade

Third grade reviewed rhythm durations of quarter notes, eighth notes, half notes, and whole notes, as well as their corresponding rests. Sixteenth notes have been the newest addition! They will also continue reading the pentatonic scale of do, re, mi, so, and la on the music staff. They will work on the entire solfège scale in early 2022!

PTO NEWS

Many thanks to all of our parent volunteers who helped spread some holiday cheer at Milton this month—especially our Holiday Shop Coordinators, Class Parents, Gardening Committee, and Luminary Coordinator and Block Captains. Thanks to all the Milton families who generously contributed to our “giving tree” by donating hats, mittens, and gift cards for families in need in partnership with Family Promise of Morris County.

There is much to look forward to upon our return in 2022 including Winter ASE session, a PTO-sponsored virtual assembly with John Marshall the Weatherman, MAS Ladies Night, and the Book Fair! In January, our MAS Family Fun Night Committee will meet to begin planning this fun outdoor event for late Spring. Look for more information and ways to get involved in this amazing event after the holiday break.

On behalf of the PTO Board, I would like to thank you for your constant support and generosity. I wish all of our Milton families, teachers, and staff a happy, safe, and healthy holiday season. Enjoy the break and see you in 2022!

Hat and Mitten Tree

Milton families out did themselves this year! Thank you to all who donated to our "mitten gift tree". We collected 60 pairs of mittens and gloves, 26 hats and $110 worth of coffee gift cards! Your generosity is appreciated.

Milton Staff Donates Toys to Valerie Fund

The Valerie Fund provides comprehensive care to children with cancer and blood disorders and their families in our centers at seven pediatric hospitals in NJ, NY, and metro Philadelphia. At our centers, psychosocial staff work alongside medical staff to help patients and families navigate through the fear, stress, and uncertainty that go hand in hand with their illness. The faculty and staff at Milton Avenue School collected and donated almost 100 presents and games for their winter holiday gifts and summer camp activities!
