Students from Cannon, Country Day, and Providence Day came to
We are happy to invite Cannon, Providence Day, and Country Day to campus for a one-day conference consisting of all crisis committees. All COVID-19 protocols will be in place and committee sizes will be limited.
To register, please email Mr. Ivey at lucas.ivey@charlottelatin.org
Although our delegation missed the opportunity to walk the hallowed halls of the United Nations in NYC, we sent a small but mighty delegation. This past weekend Sydney Wargo, Ryan Beam, Lizzy Griesser, and Sofia Gomez respresented CLS.
Charlotte Latin sent 12 delegates to MUNCH's virtual MUN Conference this past weekend--half the delegation freshman and first-time delegates! Delegates reported great experiences in their conferences.
Over Winter Break, Gabe S. and Sophia V. attended Georgetown's first ever virtual Model UN Conference. The conference boasted over 2,500 delegates from over 250 schools across the nation.
Sophia represented Finland in FIFA. After scandal rocked the organization, Sophia and member countries worked to redefine FIFA and earn back its creditability.
Gabe, acting as William D. Leahy, Chief of Staff to the Commander in Chief, participated in a crisis committee focused on national security. In 1948, tensions continued to rise between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. With the recent election of the communist-leaning Kim Il-Sung in North Korea, many were concerned about the spread of Soviet influence to South Korea and Japan, both promising pro-American allies. Committee chairs recognized Gabe's diplomacy with a verbal commendation.
Best Delegate offers MUN Training Conferences meant to guide high school and middle school beginners with their first Model UN experience, and are also good refreshers for intermediate delegates.

CLS MUN Zooms into Queen City MUN
09 December 2020
On December 5th and 6th, the CLS MUN participated in Queen City MUN, hosted by Ardrey Kell High School. Like many things, due to COVID the conference was held online via zoom. For first timers and veteran MUN students, this experience was definitely an interesting one. When it came to committee topics, there was plenty of variety for students to choose from!
The committees and topics at the conference included: DISEC (Cyber Warfare & Cyber Security), SPECPOL (Neocolonialism), SOCHUM(Reproductive Rights of Women), ECOSOC (Commission on Narcotics and Drugs), Security Council (Sino-Indian Himalayan Border Dispute), European Union (Settling Refugees and Humanitarian Crises), and Crisis Committee (Jurassic Park).
Even more exciting news, we had three first-time Latin delegates! Gabriel Carpenter represented Brazil in SOCHUM, Aditi Satish represented Canada in DISEC, and Neesa Phadke represented UK in SOCHUM.
Rounding out our veteran delegation: Jackson Morgan, Luxembourg in the European Union; Mehr Khandelwal, John Alfred Hammond in the Jurassic Park Crisis Committee; and Ryan Beam, Switzerland in SPECPOL
Four Latin students attend as chairs: Madison Yee, DISEC; Claire Little, SOCHUM; Gabe Stein, EU; and Sydney Wargo, Crisis.
Finally, congratulations to Neesa Phadke for receiving an Honorable Delegate award!
Most of our year will likely be virtual, but we hope that everyone will stay engaged!
Check out the Squawker for virtual meeting times or touch base with a member of the MUN Student Leadership Team.
The murder of George Floyd and other members of the Black community, coupled with police violence, shows the need for understanding about racism, inequity, and injustice.
Historically, Black students and students of color have been severely underrepresented in Model United Nations in the United States at all age levels. What instances of racism have Black students faced in Model UN? Is Model UN accessible to Black communities? How are Black student leaders responding to the latest calls for justice?
This event is open to all high school and college MUN participants, including students, advisors, and conference organizers, to listen and learn from Black student leaders in Model UN at the high school and college levels.
This panel will be moderated by Jamey Battle, a rising senior at UCLA and Head Delegate for UCLA's traveling Model UN team. Joining Jamey on the panel will be: Madison Glenn-Lawson, St. Vincent-St. Mary High School '20; Miles Nabritt, Bates College '21; Vyette Tiya, American University '19; Nathan Snipes, St. Vincent-St. Mary High School '20; Sarai Leon, Florida International University '22; Momona Hadish, DC International School '21.
Among their discussion points:
Is this a single movement? Either way, who are the leaders and what are the end goals?
How do the roles of the media & social media differ during this time? Do you believe that they each serve a purpose? A different purpose? Are they executing their roles effectively?
Who opposes these movements? Why? And how do we deal with those people who might sometimes be our classmates, parents, or friends?
How do we navigate our emotions, safety, and effectiveness as catalysts for social change amidst COVID-19 and heightened tensions in our country? Should we be projecting our anger outwards or suppressing it to be levelheaded?
To what extent have states been militarized and increasingly policed during these times? What specific steps can we take to stay safe amidst the heightened scrutiny and violence?
Are looters on our side?
