On April 27, 2017, the first ever Statement Making fashion show took place in the Belk Plaza. There were 30 student participants from the College of Arts + Architecture, the College of Computing and Informatics, and the College of Engineering. They designed and created their own garments to make a statement.
The fashion show was founded by a UNC Charlotte alumna, shortly after shortly after she graduated, Madison Dunaway, and a graduate student at the time, Johanna Okerlund. Dunaway and Okerlund saw that students had something so say and needed a creative outlet to say it in a space that brought people together.
We are continuing the legacy of Statement Making by bring it back in 2026.
Culture becomes complex as the layers of a person’s ethnicity, nationality, school, sports, interests, etc., make up a person’s identity. Design a wearable form or clothing that reflects your culture as you view and experience it. Statement Making is a fashion show for students to express themselves by making a statement through fashion.
