Mission Statement

The goal of Hursey’s media center is to establish a school library that is the center of the school community. The media center is an environment where students collaborate with others, pursue their interests, foster a love of reading and learning, attain 21st century skills, strengthen critical thinking skills, participate in creative activities, and engage in new learning experiences, while also being an environment that supports and provides teachers with additional tools and resources to achieve their educational duties and goals.

Hours

Hursey’s media center is open during school hours from 7:00am - 2:00pm Monday through Fridays. If after or before school appointments are requested, please email the media specialist. The media center is closed for all district scheduled holidays, breaks, work days, or school closing days.

Library Schedule and Visitation

Hursey’s media center operates on a fixed schedule. Please refer to the provided calendar in the "Library Calendar" tab for the library schedule. Collaboration in the library is highly encouraged; therefore, if teachers or staff would like to schedule the library, please email the media specialist. Students may come to the library anytime during the school day as long as they have permission from their teacher.

Circulation Policy

Primary and Lower Elementary students are allowed to check out one book at a time. Upper Elementary and Adolescent students are allowed to check out two books at a time unless a teacher requests for more book check outs. The number of book checkouts can also be reviewed on a student by student basis. Check out duration is one week for all items, and students can renew the same item up to four consecutive times. There are never any late fees for overdue books. If a book is lost or damaged, students are required to pay cash for the book, replace the book with the same book, or replace the book with a similar book. Students are expected to implement proper book care and handling when using the library and all library materials. Only adolescent students are able to check out young adult materials, which are located in its own library section and have a YA sticker on the spine of the books. If any other student wants to check out YA materials, the media specialist must receive a written or emailed permission letter from a parent or guardian. If an adolescent student is not allowed to check out YA materials, please email the media specialist to note this on the student's account.

Library Behavior Expectations

Students are encouraged to visit the library frequently, as it is a place for collaboration and exploration. Upon entering and using the library, it is expected that students respect the library, the teacher librarian, other students, and all library materials. Students are also expected to adhere to all school and library rules and listen to the teacher librarian at all times. Students who do not adhere to proper behavior in the library will lose library time and privileges.

Makerspace Policy

Although students are encouraged to use the media center’s makerspace, students must always request permission from the media specialist before using any makerspace materials. Students must also be responsible when using these items, handle these items with care, clean up items when finished using them, and return all makerspace materials to original box and location. Teachers can request usage of makerspace materials in their classrooms by emailing the media specialist.
