Mathcounts is a national math competition for middle school students. Students compete at the school level first. In February, students across the nation compete in regional competitions. Our regional is held at the Citadel, usually in mid-February. From there, if students place in the top individual spots or a school places as the top team, they move onto the state competition held in March. Our state competition is held in Columbia most years. At the state competition, the top four individual winners comprise the state team and move on to nationals in May.

Mrs. Chicarella coached Mathcounts at her former district and created a Mathcounts team at Laing in the 2021-2022 school year. The Laing Mathcounts team has placed either first or second at regionals since our team was created. Laing Mathcounts has also had students place in the top four individual spots at regionals every year. Along with these accolades, many of our Laing mathletes are invited to attend the state competition based on their overall scores at regionals. We pride ourselves on developing a winning Mathcounts team at Laing Middle School.
