Red Ribbon Week!

Be Happy. Be Brave. Be Drug Free. TM This year's Red Ribbon Week theme will help amplify the campaign's mission to encourage children, families and communities to live healthy, happy and drug-free lives. It also serves as a reminder that we are all empowered with shaping the communities around us through positivity, bravery and strength.

Erin's Law

Erin’s Law, a 2014 amendment to the South Carolina Comprehensive Health Act, requires instruction in grades K-12 in the prevention of child sexual abuse. Instructional resources approved by the SC Department of Education will be used to provide teaching activities that are aligned with health education standards. More information about the curriculum can be located here. (Spanish version)

Magical Moments!

As a part of the conclusion to the 3rd-grade How We Express Ourselves-Change Makers Unit, Motivational Speaker and Author Chis Singleton came to share his recently released children's book. The book focuses on not bullying, acceptance, and the inclusion of others that may look different from you. The book titled, Different: A Story About Loving Your Neighbor came five years after Mr. Singleton lost his mother in the Mother Emanuel AME Church tragedy.

He has traveled to many different places to help spread his message of “love is stronger than hate." Mr. Singleton also served as the 2020 Buist Academy 8th -grade virtual graduation guest speaker.

"People think that there’s a mystical power that I possess that allows me to stay so positive after going through some of the most adverse circumstances imaginable. But to me, there’s no secret, no magic. I just feel as though I’ve been through the storm numerous times, and I’ve come to realize that it won’t rain forever." Chris Singleton

Thank you to Mr. Baker (Teacher-Librarian) for arranging this wonderful, informative, and socially distanced event. Students also received a visit from the Official Mascot of the River Dogs, Charlie T. RiverDog.

Safety & Security

On Friday, October 23, out of an abundance of caution, there was an increased presence of CCSD Security on and around the Buist Academy campus. There has been recent negative attention (no viable threats) on social media directed towards our school due to images not associated with our school and inaccurate information regarding a grade-level assignment.

The safety of our students, faculty, and staff are one of our top priorities. SRO- Officer Braddish, CCSD Security, and the City of Charleston's School Security Response Team will continue to help ensure the safety and security of our school community.

All car riders should Anson Street for arrival and dismissal. Bus and bike riders should use Calhoun Street (Dogwood Alley).

Students not in class by 8:00 a.m. are marked tardy.

For the safety of our students and staff please yield to students entering and exiting their vehicle opposite of the curb during carpool. We ask that drivers please remain in your vehicle and allow staff on duty to assist your student as a courtesy to others.

If your student needs help with car seats and seat belts, after loading, please drive all the way up to assist them. We encourage you to teach students to independently perform these tasks.
