The James Island Charter High School Boys Soccer Program is built upon tireless effort, selflessness and teamwork. Only the right players can help us be successful at the highest level of South Carolina High School Soccer.
A failure to comply with the Team Rules, Duties or JICHS School and Athletic Policies - on or off the field - can lead to your disqualification and dismissal from this program.
Open tryouts for all eligible candidates, varsity and junior-varsity begin Monday, February 3 at 3:45pm to 5:30pm on the JIYSC field 1 on the Bayview field complex.
Seventh and Eighth graders interested in playing JV should arrive as soon as possible once school is dismissed. (There will be transportation available on our athletics bus from Camp Rd. Middle School.) Remember you must have a physical to try out.
1. Complete the preseason interest form
2. Get a Physical Exam done (any doctor is fine).
Make sure it is on OUR physical form.
Your physical MUST be completed BEFORE you can practice AT ALL!
3. Sign up for an account on BigTeams (PlanetHS).
Enter the "Athletic Forms" link
Complete all SEVEN sections but DO NOT pay the athletic insurance or any other fees until you've made a team.
Once you've made a team
Pay the $50 ATHLETIC INSURANCE fee online:
Pay online at JICHS Revtrak.
Make sure you click on "ATHLETIC INSURANCE".
NOTE: Athletic Insurance is required for ALL athletes in Charleston County. ONLINE PAYMENT ONLY!
A physical form and parent permission form must be submitted on Bigteams and parent permission forms must be completed BEFORE you can participate in pre-season or tryouts! If you have seen your pediatrician in the last year, a form can be filled out by them, or you may go to any medical care office. You only need one physical per school year. If you have played a sport for the school this year, you have already done this part.
Questions?
Is there preseason conditioning?
Yes, for 7th -12th graders beginning January 6 from 3:45pm to 5:30pm on the JIYSC field 1 on the Bayview field complex.
Attendees should wear appropriate soccer clothing for conditions, and bring cleats and running shoes. Goalkeepers should bring gloves. Players should bring their own water. Emphasis will be on building speed, strength, endurance, and mental toughness, while expanding our threshold of pain. Conditioning is optional.
Do all students who try out "make" a team?
No. There are more athletes trying out than spots available in the program. Juniors and
Seniors who tryout must make the varsity team in order to play soccer for JICHS. Middle
school students are not eligible for the varsity team. There will be two selections, both before 7 February.
Candidates must have passed half of their classes for the previous semester (at a
minimum), have a clean disciplinary record, and get good recommendations from their
teachers.
Fitness tryouts will take place the last week of preseason and include measurements of
speed, strength, and endurance. In order to make the varsity team, a candidate must
be able to complete a mile run in under six minutes.
ARE ALL tryout Sessions MANDATORY?
Yes. Work and vacations are NOT acceptable excuses for missing tryouts, or training
during the season. Players still participating in winter sports at the high school are
exempt from these tryout dates and may tryout following the close of their winter sports
season.
If I am sick or injured, should I come to tryouts?
James Island Charter HS soccer will be following all safety protocols during the season.
If you do not feel well or are aware that you have been exposed to Covid-19, you must
not come to tryouts. You should contact Head Coach Todd Robinson
(michael_robinson.c@charleston.k12.sc.us). All candidates will still be required to meet
the fitness testing requirements if they have missed any sessions.
I have been in the soccer class for PE, will I automatically make a team?
No. The soccer class is designed to help student athletes put themselves in the best
position to make a team and become a successful member of team. Likewise, it is also
possible to make a team without having been in soccer class.
I was on varsity or junior varsity last year, will I automatically make the team?
No. Every year is different, and the coaches will evaluate everyone by what they can
contribute this year, while always keeping an eye towards the future of the program. In
many ways it becomes harder to keep getting picked rather than easier.
How are teams formed?
Each candidate will have ample opportunities to showcase themselves in all facets of the
game. Specifically, the coaches look to evaluate four components : (1) technical ability -
- speed of play, successful application of skill at high speeds and while under pressure;
(2) tactical awareness and application -- speed of thought, ability to read the game and
make decisions that are best for the team (3) physical development, conditioning and
attributes - speed, quickness, strength, agility, aerobic capacity (4) psychological -
maturity, competitive spirit, attentiveness, leadership, communication, mental
toughness, cooperation.
What if I have more questions?
