SCDE ESOL Endorsement Requirements

English to Speakers of Other Languages Endorsement

ESOL Endorsement Cohort in 2023-2024

Both courses emphasize ways the content teacher can support Multilingual Learners (MLs) with focus on explicit teaching of vocabulary, micro-lessons for oral and written English language development, and scaffolding to develop academic language proficiency. Aspects of cultural diversity are interwoven throughout both semesters.

READ 615 and READ 616 together are approved by SCDE for the ESOL endorsement. These two courses are prerequisites for a set of three additional courses (3 graduate credits each) also offered through SC PALMETTO that lead to add-on certification in ESOL. (Add-on certification also requires a successful score on the Praxis exam for ESOL.)

*NOTE: These credentials are similar to the model for Gifted Education, where endorsement provides skills for work in your own  classroom with that population and certification means that you are qualified to serve as a full-time teacher in that field.

If interested in this ESOL Endorsement opportunity (committing to both courses), contact Fred Pleis at frederick_pleis@charleston.k12.sc.us
