Marine Science

Class overview

We are all lucky enough to live in a city that has a deep history and connection with the ocean, so let’s explore the Big Blue! In Marine Science students in grades 6th-8th will be able to explore the topics of ● ocean conservation ● marine organisms and ecosystems ● the oceans effect on climate ● how the ocean and humans are connected ● the last frontier: how the ocean is largely unexplored.

About Me: Why Teach Marine Science?

I love the ocean and am so excited to be teaching Marine Science with the Cario Comets! I am new to the Charleston area and originally from Baltimore, Maryland, where I grew up deep in the Chesapeake Bay culture. Living on the bay has instilled a life-long love of all things seafood, especially oysters and crabs. Some of my favorite childhood memories are learning about the marshes while clamming and crabbing with my grandpa.

After I graduated from Towson University with a Bachelors in Biology, I moved to Seattle where I worked with the Audubon Society. There I got to expand my connection to the ocean by learning about the pacific. I participated in seabird surveys and learned how important pelagic birds are to the ocean ecosystem. I also developed a love of tidepooling, searching for all of the creatures hiding in the rocks at low tide.

My passion for the ocean makes it a source of great joy, and sometimes sadness. It is no surprise to many of us that the ocean is currently facing a lot of challenges. The conservation issues that face the Big Blue can feel overwhelming sometimes, but living in a place where the joy of the ocean shines through keeps me positive. This is what makes me feel at home in the Lowcountry. I’m so excited to help the students of Cario foster their own relationship with the marine ecosystem that is all around us!
