I love anything by Beverly Cleary, especially the Ramona Books.
My favorite series is "Series of Unfortunate Events" by Lemony Snicket (I really love how the author helps the reader increase their vocabulary just by reading. "The oft-repeated phrase, a word which here means, followed by definition of the word just used, introduces a word or phrase that might be unfamiliar to the child reading the story. The author doesn't just define the words, he explains common expressions and phrases."
