Purpose (NHS3)
To study the long-term health effects of nutrition, hormones, environment, and nurses’ occupational exposures among women and men
Particular areas of focus are fertility and pregnancy events as well as the association of adolescent diet with breast cancer risk
A key goal is enrollment of individuals from diverse ethnic backgrounds
NHS3 Study Function
Participants complete a module (questionnaire) every 6 months once joining the cohort. If a module is not completed they do not move on to the next one. The modules are completed sequentially. Sub-studies are usually open to participants who have completed at least MOD1 and MOD2, though there are some exceptions.
There is a sub-study for individuals who indicate they are currently pregnant or trying to become pregnant and are willing to complete additional questionnaires.
Eligibility
A nurse of any gender (currently working, not working, or retired)
A nursing student of any gender
Age 18 and over, and born in 1965 or later
Living in the United States or Canada
Willing to complete online questionnaires on a periodic basis
Participants must have or be working toward one of the following certifications:
Registered Nurse (RN)
Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)
Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN)
Specialized RN, such as Nurse Practitioners (NP), Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA), or other RNs holding advanced practice certifications/licensures (e.g., Certified Nurse Midwife)
Inclusion Criteria
Anyone who completes Mod 1 is considered “in the cohort,” regardless of their current status.
The exceptions are those who don’t meet the age criteria or haven’t earned/aren’t working toward a qualifying degree.
Historical Eligibility
Cancer exclusion: If they reported cancer hx in Mod 1, they were deemed ineligible. Cancer restriction removed 8/2019. LS used to not display the second half of Mod 1 if cancer was reported. This was also changed 8/2019.
Degree: We would ask what degrees people had, but generally people used to not be excluded based on degree. Now (since 10/28/21), they must have one of the degrees on the new registration page to be eligible.
