11th Grade College Prep, Honors, & AP English Language Capstone Research

Philosophy: A study of literature can contextualize the American Dream. It can inspire us to research how we can realize our own personal role and potential careers in creating an American Dream and contributing to society.

Purpose: To engage students in personal reflection and application of prior research skills, literary experiences/content, career-related research content, and societal/individual goals. To synthesize primary and secondary research to examine college and career interests as a factor in one's own contribution to society.

Task Overview: Students will conduct research and study literary influences to define the American Dream. They will define the American Dream and research examples found in our society. Students will consider both the ideals and material concepts and consider the following, "What is the American Dream?", "What does it take to achieve this dream?", and "Who determines one’s success in the dream?" They will compare at least two perspectives on the American Dream and discuss each of these three questions from each perspective. Students will create their own perspective and find a connected potential career.

Project Components: Students will independently author an American Dream research paper and collaboratively create a multi-genre American Dream presentation. This presentation will challenge students to address the following essential questions:

  • What is the importance of hopes and dreams and planning for the future?
  • What are your hopes and dreams related to the provided rubric?
  • How is the universal theme of the American Dream portrayed in various genres?
  • What do you want but can’t have?
  • How do relationships with family and friends measure a person’s success?
