Position: Head Varsity Coach

College: Coffeyville Community College & The University of Kansas

   Bruce Hula is entering his nineteenth year at the helm of the Braves' basketball program. Coach Hula coached the Braves to their first FHL league title in his first season as the head coach (2005-06) and then repeated that same feat his second year (2006-07) winning back to back league titles. The Braves captured league titles again in the 2010-11 season as well as in 2013-14, & 2016-17. The 2013-14 Team went undefeated through their first 21 games before eventually falling to league foe Osage City High School in the Sub-State semi-final match-up. In that same season the Braves captured their first FHL tournament championship.  Coach Hula also lead the Braves to two consecutive State Basketball berths in 2009 & 2010 and then they earned another state trip in 2018.

   As a prep, Bruce received all-state honors at Jefferson West High School playing basketball, then continued to Coffeyville Community College under the tutelage of Coach Bin Graefe. Coach Hula then transferred to the University of Kansas where he played on the JV squad for the Jayhawks under Coach Mark Turgeon.

   Hula's coaching experience started while at the University of Kansas. As he was working on his bachelor's degree, he began coaching with Coach Turgeon at KU's JV level and then moved on to coaching the freshmen squad at nearby, then 4A, Perry-Lecompton High School as a rule 10 coach. He held this position for five years. From there, Coach Hula moved to Medicine Lodge with his first teaching assignment and coached at the middle school level for four years. He is currently in his twenty-fourth year at Council Grove and has been with the High School Boy's program since his arrival in 1999 coaching first the freshman squad (1999-2001) then the JV (2001-2005)

Bruce is married to Beth and they have been married since March of 1995. Bruce and Beth have three children, Kate (married to Orion Hughes), Kobe, & Koen. 

 

Assistant Coach Joshua Gant jgant@cgrove417.org

Hometown: Dwight, Kansas

Position: Assistant Coach/Head Junior Varsity Coach

H.S. Alma Mater: Council Grove High School

College: Kansas Wesleyan University and Emporia State University

  Joshua Gant was born and raised in Council Grove and rural Dwight. Coach Gant graduated from CGHS in 1995. He then attended Kansas Wesleyan University for one year where he played basketball and ran cross country. After his stint at KWU, Joshua attended Emporia State University and earned a degree in elementary education. He now teaches 6th grade at Council Grove Elementary School. Coach Gant is in his 19th year as assistant at CGHS for the men's basketball program. Coach Gant also is head cross country coach for both the boys and girls middle and high school teams and an assistant coach for the Braves baseball team. Coach Gant had the privilege of coaching his brother Isaac Carr during his career as a Brave. 

  Joshua married Lindsay in the summer of 2013 and enjoys following KU basketball and spending time with his wife, brothers, sisters, nieces, and nephews.

Position: Asst. H.S./Head C-Team Coach

H.S. Alma Mater:  Council Grove High School

College: Emporia State University and Fort Hays State University


  Coach Sisson was born and raised in Council Grove and is a proud CG Basketball alum, class of 2012. He returns to the Council Grove High School boy's staff after spending the last 4 years as an assistant girls basketball coach in Council Grove. He is a graduate of Emporia State University with a teaching degree and a graduate of Fort Hays State University with a building administration degree. Coach Sisson is the proud father to a future CG hooper Bentley Sisson, class of 2040. He is married to his beautiful wife and fellow Council Grove c/o 2009 alum Danielle Sisson. He enjoys spending time with his family, golfing, watching sports, and telling bad jokes.
